NEW DELHI: Aiming at strengthening its medium-lift helicopter fleet, the IAF is planning to procure 71 more Mi-17 V5 choppers, including 12 for the Ministry of Home Affairs.

These would be in addition to the 80 already ordered from Russia.

The MI-17 V5 falls in armed helicopter category, with substantial and effective firepower. It has latest and more powerful engines that enhance its payload carrying capability at higher altitudes.

Of the 80 choppers ordered earlier, Defence Minister A K Antony formally inducted their first batch on Friday.

Of the 71 helicopters to be ordered, 59 would be provided to the IAF for replacing its old Mi-8 and Mi-17IV choppers and six would be given to the Border Security Force.

The remaining six would be distributed among the other central armed police forces, IAF officials said.

Earlier the IAF was proceeding with the acquisition of 59 choppers only but later on the MHA requested to club its requirements also in the same Defence Ministry proposal, they said.

In 2008, India had signed a deal with Russia to supply 80 Mi-17s to augment its existing fleet of around 150 Mi-8 and Mi-17 medium-lift choppers, which have over five tonne load carrying capability and are also used to ferry troops and VIPs.

IAF had felt the need of inducting more medium-lift choppers after a spate of natural disasters following the tsunami in December 2004 and heavy snowfall in Kashmir in 2005.

The Mi-17 V5 is an upgrade of Mi-17 choppers in the medium-lift category and is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics and on board navigation systems.

On the machine's capabilities, an IAF official said, "It has on-board weather radar, state-of-the-art autopilot and is compatible with the latest generation night vision goggles."

The Mi-17 variants have operated in various types of terrain, including Siachen Glacier, and have also proved their mettle in UN missions.

:undecided: Mh, although I like the Mi 17s, this might delay developments of HALs IMRH, because all older Mi 8s should be replaced with new Mi 17s when these orders are fulfilled. On the other side, this might offer us a chance to join the Ka 92 development, as a NG helicopter development, which would be the better idea imo, because it gets our industry the chance to get into developments with newer techs again.

more russian MI-17V5's????.................looks like chinook is gonna win the heavy lift competition!!:D

That's one way of reading it but, although I think the CH-47F is going to win anyway, I'd say the two deals were not linked in anyway. India is these days after the best possible tech it can get and the Mi-17 V5 (especially the custimised version IAF is getting)is a very advanced helicopter and a HUGE step up from the current Mi-8/VIs in service. Obviously there are better helos on the market but this helo has been in service in many forms for decades and has proven itself very well in the diverse environment of India. Sl thing that should be added is whilst the IAF is going for a 1-1 replacement of older Mil-8/17 versions the new V5s are significantly more capable so the capability of the IAF helo fleet will actually be dramatically boosted. Also these 71 (59+12) were always planned sl this is not new news to appease Russians for possible loss in another deal- they already save enought deals from India and they ave been put in their place so as not too expect to win every deal on a de facto basis anymore.

+ just FYI it is also cool to note that of the original 80 and subsequent 59 V5s atleast 10-15% are further customised from IAF-specific upgrades for Special Heliborne Operations and are to be primarily used for such-but this is being kept quite for obvious reasons.

they certainly going all out in modernization of the chopper fleet. good for them :)

The 12 for Home Ministry will be used by NSG, I suppose?

BTW, are these Mi-17's really the best out there?

What happened to our plan of buying the Apache's?

As mentioned in the article 6 are earmarked for BSF and the other 6 for other CAPFs so maybe 1-2 for CRPF, 1 for ITBP (but i think they have plans for their wing these days) 1-2 for CISF and the rest probably for NSG but that's not certain as currently the NSG already has dedicated IAF Mil-17's on constant deputation to them.

+ regarding Apaches, these are NOT in any way meant instead of Apache deal (which is very much on track, wait til FY-2012) but to complement existing IAF helo fleet to give the fleet as a whole more firepower and perhaps free up other assets which previously would have escort unarmed Mil-17s (although the current Mi-17s can also be armed). These V5s are NOT attack helos but assualt helos so they can comfortably conduct hostile missions.

thats good, India does have the capacity to buy more, since its current Army spending is only about 2.5 % of the GDP

The entire defence budget is only 1.8 % of the GDP. I'm not sure how much of that goes to the army, but has to be obviously lower than that.

China is building 40 mi 17s a year under licence.... and India is buying them.

India needs to do what China has done. get a licence and build them.
