The much-delayed and hyped Indigenous Light Combat Aircraft ‘Tejas’ will finally be inducted to the Indian Air Force from June this year.Talking to mediapersons here today, Defence Aviation major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) Chairman and Managing Director T Suvarna Raju said initially four fighters would operate from the hangers of HAL here. Subsequently it would be shifted to the Sulur base of IAF in Coimbatore.

He said the idea of locating the initial squadron in the city’s HAL facilities was to iron out any flight difficulties or issues. He said the four aircraft was part of the series production IAF had ordered. This year in all, seven aircraft would be delivered to IAF and by 2018 end, all the 20 ordered aircraft would be delivered. He said HAL had also initiated dialogue with the IAF for purchase of ‘Tejas Mk III’ aircraft. The size of the order would be over 100, he added.

From earlier reported Two aircraft, the numbers have gone to Four now.

A good development for Tejas. We are talking about MK-1s here. Right?

Have heard this for the first time. What are its specs if known? What i have found is below.

"Among these would be a programme to integrate technologies developed as part of India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft [AMCA] programme into the Light Combat Aircraft [LCA], Tejas. This variant would be identified as Mark III."

Also

It would reportedly be powered by Kaveri engine but Kaveri isnt giving desired results till recently and we are talking about heat signature reduction as part of stealthy features. If HAL is offering Tejas MK-III to IAF then does it mean they have brought Kaveri in the desirable state?

Kaveri is only delinked from the LCA project but never scraped and development of the Kaveri continues. To note important things is.

1. Some important decission will be made for the LCA in DEC 2016.
2. GTRE is also going for 110KN engine -- meant for AMCA.
3. One MIG 29 Test bed, might be purchased from Russia for Kaveri Supersonic testing.
4. LCA was always designed around Kaveri.
5. Probable date for Kaveri to get mass production is 2024-25.

Thanks.

.
LCA MK-1 with IOC-2 standard. -- Around 20 to be build, after that SOP-2018 standard will be made which includes AESA Radar, Aerial Refuel Probe and with FOC certification -- 100 numbers.
Thank U Sir.

Thank U again Sir. Its understood that Kaveri would not be left to die like that as even earlier it was reported that it ll power Aura UCAV. But is contract for Tejas Mark-II with IAF finalised? If yes then like reported would IAF be flying only 20 Tejas Mark-I till 2018 or till Mark-II gets FOC? AMCA or Mark III have quite long way to go. Is HAL offering an aircraft which is in design phase? Even if we consider same Tejas with Modifications and stealthy features as AMCA then still its a long way to go.

A version of the Kaveri will power the Aura UCAV.

As it stands there are 120 LCA on order and that can be split into two parts:

20 (SP2-21)*IOC-2 LCA MK.1 (currently under production and to enter service this year)
100*(SP-22 onwards) LCA MK.1A FOC standard with an AESA radar and IFR probe (to be produced from 2018 once the IOC-2 MK.1s are in service).

More LCA MK.1s can (and likely will) be produced on a need basis beyond that as by 2020 HAL will have the productive capacity to produce 25 LCA/year.

The LCA MK.2 is an entirely seperate effort that will be redesigning the MK.1 (larger wingspan, longer airframe, more powerful engine; F414 vs F404 on the MK.1s, improved avionics etc etc).
