A 20 minute blitz mid air put lives of over 500 passengers onboard 2 international flights at risk -- when an Indian Air Force Sukhoi flight came dangerously close to them. The incident happened on the 20th of this month lead to many frantic calls from the Delhi radar controller to the Sukhoi which couldn't be reached.

Sukhoi was scrambled to intercept some unknown aircraft around Amritsar.

Facking Indian media sensationalising/headline grabbing for all they're worth. Definetion of "blitz" an intensive or sudden military attack. Is the what really happened here? Or a case of a technical glitch that lasted for a short period and happens across the world on a daily basis?

Actually what happened

UFO near IB, IAF scrambles Sukhoi-30MKI

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force scrambled a Su-30MKI after its radars detected a slow moving unidentified flying object coming towards India from the International Border with Pakistan and in the process, it came close to two civilian flights operating in that area.

The IAF is also looking into an incident where its An-32 transport aircraft was about to land at a close runway at the Delhi airport earlier this week.

Early last week, "our radars picked up a UFO near Amritsar which was coming towards India from the International Border with Pakistan" and a Su-30MKI was scrambled from Halwara air base to intercept it, IAF sources said here.

As the aircraft was being launched, the air traffic was asked to be cleared at heights between 25,000 and 30,000 feet as the UFO was flying at 28,000 feet, they said.

Later on, the Su-30MKI identified that the object was a weather balloon which was flying with the wind towards the border and it returned from there after being airborne for around 20 minutes, they said.

Reports suggested that two civilian planes of Thai Airways and another foreign operator were flying around 10 nautical miles away from the IAF aircraft.

The IAF denied that there was any "near-miss incident" involving its aircraft as it was under positive radar coverage and was cleared for operating in that area.

The DGCA is looking into the incident, sources said.

Lol, now this is how it should've been reported- compare that to the fools at "Times Now".

the radar picked up a weather balloon? something that Chinese used a a while back to spy on the Indian side?

From the title, I thought that the IAF's MKIs bombed a passenger train, or something of that sort. Blitz?:hitwall:

BTW the MKIs have bigass radars that can detect a tiny fighter beyond 250 or 300 kms, and passenger airplanes possibly much beyond that. Not to mention, a truckload of other sesnsors. The fact that they were vectoring in on a balloon across the border says something of their detection capabilities. There is no way they are going to collide with a passenger jet, these pilots know what they are doing. Maybe the pilots in the pasenger planes got spooked when the MKIs unexpectedly passed by.

Blame the OP, for changing the title.
@Oscar @Jungibaaz - Please correct the title to the original one, instead of the OP's dramatized one.

Radars cannot figure out what a certain object is, unless the radar signature matches already accumulated data. The radars pick up any flying object, and if they can't figure out what it is, it is classified as a UFO. The speed and bearing can be calculated. When a UFO of that size approaches the hottest border in the world, obviously the IAF will react.

This goes to show how densely they have created an air defence network.

Perhaps the Passenger pilots got spooked, perhaps not but the fact remains the ATC (both IAF and civil) had the MKIs, Target (weather ballon) and passenger a/c on their screens, the MKIs didn't get within 10 nautical miles of the airliners and the MKIs would have known full well where the passenger a/c where given their own onboard detection capability. Talk about a non-story. And given the IAF had asked for 25,000-30,000 ft to be cleared for the MKIs- where's the issue?

And the IAF not only tracked but intercepted this ballon- impressive to say the least. Now the origins of the weather balloon are open to debate but that's irrelevant here and now.

@Oscar, @WebMaster please get this fool to change the title of the thread.

I know how radars work - I was noting and pointing to the readers the hidden value in the report - that India radar network (in that location at least) is now able to detect a "weather balloon" which is pretty impressive I must say.

Quick reaction from IAF and they sent MKI not Mig-21 or Mig-29 :)

The News link itself has the inflammatory title @Abingdonboy

10 nautical miles is quite apart, however.. 10 nautical miles does go by fast at 500 knots.
That being said, it would be the responsibility of ATC and not IAF pilots. They(the pilots) would end up flying into the jets if the ATC mismanaged them. There is very little time for reaction.
