IAF looks for more C-130J aircrafts

BANGALORE: The Indian Air Force is actively pursuing the purchase of more transport aircrafts, include Lockheed Martin's C-130J Super Hercules, to bolster its strategic lift capabilities, even as it seeks to move an increasing number of troops and military equipment along the Line of Actual Control, which the country shares with China.

"Yes, we would like to have more C-130J and C-17 aircrafts. We will start with the statement of case soon," outgoing Air Chief Marshal PV Naik said during a press briefing held at the IAF's Headquarters Training Command on Wednesday.

The Air Chief's statement comes six months after ET had reported that Lockheed Martin had held talks with New Delhi for a follow-on order for six 130 J Super Hercules aircrafts.

The aircrafts, which are reputed to be the best in its class, were purchased for $962.7 million, and have been customised for Special Forces operations.

Naik, who will be replaced by Air Marshal NAK Browne as the country's Air Chief, also said that any such deal would be negotiated through the Foreign Military Sales route.

The heavy-lifters are seen as critical to the IAF's needs as it looks to replace its Soviet-era IL-76 transport aircraft fleet, which have been dogged by a lack of serviceability and spares, and are also coming to the end of their operational lifespan.

"The IL, which is a 40-tonne plus aircraft, as a fleet has served us very well, but it is aging now. So, one strategy is their up-gradation and overhauling, but they do not have too much life left. The other strategy is the purchase of the C-17 aircrafts, which carries twice the load of an Ilyushin, and has the advantage of landing on shorter air strips," Naik.

why IF not looking for more and more fighters and multirole air crafts:hitwall::hitwall:

1. There is a urgent requirements of heavy and medium transport aircrafts as our current assets are very old and the growing threat of china. The requirements is huge but before our JV with russians will take time so we are just filling the gaps with some very potent aircrafts.

2.) Who says we are not looking for more and more fighters we are inducting

SU30-MKI = 280
MMRCA = 126-200 (May be)
LCA Tejas = 120-150
FGCA = 250-300

3.) This deal is about transport aircraft you should not assume it as not looking after fighters.

4.) Also, we want to induct 5th gen fighter aircrafts as it is under trials and we are already inducting/planning to induct 4.5++ gen aircrafts there is no need to buy more of these planes as we have a option to induct more and more of 5th gen aircrafts.

India looked for many fighters in MRCA, if every thing seems good India may have 2 MRCA's and not to mention we are inducting Tejas and Mki's.

.
C-17 Globemaster-3 along with the C-130J Super Hercules are very potent and rugged platform,they are very maitanance friendly as well.These aircraftr would give India quite a big strategic advantage in South Asia. :yahoo:

why IF not looking for more and more fighters and multirole air crafts:hitwall::hitwall:

Aircraft that are able to perform logistical operations is very crucial for being effective during both wartime and peacetime. The C-17 is one of the best in its class. I am already starting to get envious :P

But recently IAF Chief said china have more than 3500 thousand fighter aircrafts. so we should more concerned about our attack and multirole aircraft fleet rather than throwing huge money in troop transport aircrafts

.
They still use more than 1000 Mig 21 and 3500 is by far over exagrated.May be meant to say 3500 aircraft including fighter,bomber,trainers,AWACS,transport etc and the reporter got it wrong.
REGARDS....

.
@ omega
but mig-21 is still a potent interceptor
dont know if same with f-7 or not

Friend, just look at the size of china also they are bully that's why they have made most of their neighbors into enemy.

Just image they are surrounded by s korea, japan, russia, India etc. etc.

.
@ Veeru India is also surrounded by enemies as you know
and some of these are not friends

.
Thats why I am saying increase your attack potential so that you can show your aggressiveness towards your enemy

At present India cant show aggressiveness to china you know why

Would this C-130j deal be over and above the 12 (6+6) deal already on the table or is this article referring to the follow on order of 6 to bring total in IAF to 12? Plus would the 12 in IAF all be used for Special Ops? as the first 6 are intended to do?
