It was reported that the fuel tank of the indigenously developed and built Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas fell in farm land near Sulur air base.

Chennai: Fuel tank of an Indian Air Force jet fell in a field in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday morning. The incident happened when the plane was airborne.

It was reported that the fuel tank of the indigenously-developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas fell in farm land near Sulur air base. The incident happened when the aircraft was undertaking a flight.

The LCA jet, meanwhile, landed safely at the Sulur air base. There have been no casualties or injuries in the incident.

The fuel tank that dropped in the farm field was a 1200-litre drop tank.

Taking note of the incident, the Indian Air Force has ordered an investigation into the matter.

“Today morning at around 0840h, one fuel drop tank fell off from a Tejas aircraft on a routine sortie from Sulur Air Base near Coimbatore. The aircraft landed back safely after the incident. No damage was reported on ground. The cause of the incident is being investigated,” the IAF said in a statement.

An external fuel tank from a Tejas aircraft dropped out of the sky and onto a field in Irugur, Coimbatore on Tuesday morning. The parts of the aircraft fell onto the field after catching fire mid-air.

According to initial reports, a 1,200-capacity additional fuel tank fell from the Air Force plane. The impact on the field reportedly created a three-foot crater and parts of the tank were scattered across the area. The impact caused a scare for workers on the field and at a nearby cement godown.

The Training Department of the Indian Air Force clarified that it was an external fuel tank of a Tejas Light Combat Aircraft in which two of their personnel were training.


Nandhakumar, a worker on the field, said that he saw people running towards the field around 8.30 am on Tuesday. “I rushed to see what happened. Parts of an aircraft were scattered across the field 10-foot wide and three-foot deep pits. Some crops in the area were burnt and damaged. We informed the village officer immediately who came to the spot with the police to investigate the issue. People from the air base also came to the spot and took back the parts,” he said.

An official statement from the Indian Air Force said that the aircraft was on a routine sortie when the incident happened. “Today morning around 0840h one fuel drop tank fell off from a Tejas aircraft on a routine sortie from Sulur Air Base near Coimbatore. The aircraft landed back safely after the incident. No damage was reported on ground. The cause of the incident is being investigated,” the statement said.

A Light Combat Aircraft Tejas had a mid-air scare when one fuel drop tank fell off from the fighter on a routine sortie from the Indian Air Force's Sulur base near Coimbatore. The incident took place at 8:40 am on Tuesday but there was no damage on the ground.

IAF's No. 45 Squadron ‘Flying Daggers', which operates the Tejas, is based Sulur Air Force Station in Tamil Nadu. The air force is in the process of replacing its ageing fleet of MiG-21 Bison jets with the Tejas.

Tejas Mark 1 (Mk1) got the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) on February 21, 2019, during the Aero India 2019 at Yelahanka Air Force Sation, Bengaluru. The FOC was given after Tejas demonstrated its capability to fire the Derby Air-to-Air Beyond Visual Range missile, integration of active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, electronic warfare suites, mid-air refuelling and the ability to carry out the air-to-ground bombing.

This is the second incident involving an IAF fighter dropping its fuel tank in less than a week. On June 27, 2019, a Jaguar attack aircraft of the IAF had to drop its fuel tanks and Carrier Bomb Light Stores (CBLS) pods following a bird-hit soon after taking off from Air Force Station Ambala, Punjab.
In that incident, too, there were no reports of any damage as the Jaguar pilot showed quick thinking and clever assessment of an emergency situation which not only saved the fighter aircraft but also the lives of many civilians on Thursday. "On the morning of 27 June19, an IAF Jaguar aircraft loaded with two additional fuel drop tanks & Carrier Bomb Light Stores (CBLS) pods took off from AFS Ambala for a training mission. Immediately after take off, the aircraft encountered a flock of birds," the IAF tweeted along with a video.

"The bird hit resulted in the failure of one of its engines. Despite most serious emergencies staring in his face, the young pilot assessed the situation in seconds, jettisoned two additional fuel drop tanks & CBLS Pods as per Standard Operating Procedure & safely landed the a/c," read the second tweet. "His actions bear testimony to the highest professional standards of the IAF resulting from extensive operational training. The professionalism & quick thinking by the pilot not only saved a war waging asset but also the lives of many civilians in the area adjoining the airfield," it added.
