IAF keen to enhance sourcing Helicopter spares from Punjab

Chandigarh, Oct 3 (PTI) The Indian Air Force is keen to enhance sourcing of spare parts from Punjab for overhauling of its fleet of helicopters and asked the state industry to focus on tapping defence procurement business by supplying engineering items.
We require spare parts for repair and overhauling of our helicopters and look towards Punjab industry to supplying these items to us, IAF, 3BRD, Air Commodore, Suresh Singh said here today. Located in Chandigarh, IAF 3BRD (Base Repair Depot) is the only depot in the country which overhauls, repair and carries out maintenance of Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters. Currently, IAF 3BRD is mainly procuring its spares from Russia, Ukraine and from few states including Bangalore in India.
Punjabs share in engineering supplies to IAF is pegged at Rs 20 crore per annum, he said. The potential for defence supplies could also be gauged from the fact that IAF is buying 80 Mi-17 V-5 helicopters from Russia which would be requiring maintenance and overhauling.
IAF requires several spare parts including fasteners, gearing parts, chrome plating, machining for repairing of helicopters.IAF Air Commodore said procuring indigenous spares for its helicopters will also shorten the lead time in their servicing. Lead time is quite high for getting supply of spares from other countres which is not less than 6 months, he said.A lead time is delay between the initiation and execution of a particular process or order.
IAF is participating in an Expo Destination Punjab at Amritsar which is being organized by CII.Over 120 exhibitors are participating in four day expo starting October 7, with a focus on MSME sector.The key events in the expo will be session on Catalyzing Punjab Industry for Defence Procurement, Future of Manufacturing in Punjab, Vendor Development Programmes for engineering sector.
