NEW DELHI: Defence minister A K Antony on Wednesday said that by the end of the 13th Plan period, Indian Air Force's combat fleet would be of 42
squadrons, which is more than the strength sanctioned by the government.

"During the period 2007-2022, the strength at the end of 11th, 12th and 13th Plan periods is expected to increase to 35.5, 35 and 42 squadrons respectively," Antony said in a written reply to a query in Rajya Sabha.

Government has sanctioned the IAF to have a total of 39.5 squadrons of fighter aircraft.

He said that the Air Force will reach the peak of strength with the induction of Su-30 MKIs, Jaguars, Medium Multi-role Combat Aircraft (M-MRCA), Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) and the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA).

Antony said at the beginning of the 11th Plan period, the force had only 32 squadrons.

Defence minister added that the IAF was in the process of carrying out upgrades in its existing fleet of Mirage 2000, MiG 21, MiG 27, MiG 29 and Jaguar fighter aircraft and adding force multipliers such as the Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) and mid-air refueling aircraft.

Antony said that induction of new aircraft and replacement of existing aircraft as well as enhancing operational capabilities to meet the prevailing threat scenario were an ongoing process in the force.

Replying to another question, he said the LCA would be inducted in the IAF by 2010-11.

IAF fighter squadrons to rise to 42 by 2022: Antony-India-The Times of India

What do you say....guys...Is it possible..?? with current speed of aircraft induction ???:what:

I think in 2022 India have more then 42 sqn. You can see in current pipeline India has to produce no of fighter

Currently produce
Su-30mki - 100 130 (16=1 sqn. in the case of su-30 or fgfa)
lca - 40 mk1 150mk2/mk3
mmrca 126 + 76 optional
fgfa 40(2 or 3sqn. before 2022)
mca atleast 3 sqn.

Upgradation of mirage 2000, mig 29, jaguar & mig 27 can go for 2025.
around 400 Aircraft need to built in 10-12 year...

Frankly No of squadrons or planes i less important than the ability to produce them fast..Few wars start overnight.Generally it takes about two to three months to prapare after the decision has been made..In that sense i assume LCA Tejas is more important than Su30 MKI.
And for defensive wars unless intelligence is really kaputt, they would know in advance n prepare accordingly..so would any country for that matter

Doubtful, I don't think HAL has that much of manufacturing capacity...currently HAL can produce 15 SU-30 MKIs per year...so it will take around 7 years to reach at 100. ...others LCA,FGFA,MCA are not even ready yet..... And in this counting of all aircraft.. what about Mig-21 which will retire after 2015.:undecided:

As far as I know 18 is one sqn, thats why they want only the first 18 Mrca produced outside India.. And he is right about the Mki, we will have around 100 this year (the first 40 was build in Russia) and production is expected to be finished by 2014/15. He forgot to include 125 Mig Bisons, which are also upgraded like the Mig 27 (x40, and 29 (x70). They all should stay in service for at least 2020. Upgrade of Mirage (x50) and Jags (40?) Thats 555 without 100 / Mrca 200 and LCA.

200 MKI, 126 MRCA, 200 LCA. All others would be towards the end of their life.

You are correct regarding 230 MKI.
Let's not commit anything about LCA numbers 40 are ordered let the after first 4 LSP (LSP 1 and 2 are out) rest will be of MK II standard let them fly and then only IAF will give any numbers so please no speculation. .
MRCA 126 will be introduced till 2018 after that only any decision will be taken about rest 74.

No need to speculate anything PAK FA after 2-3 years only you will come to know wnything.

Regarding MCA it's wind tunnel model is out still the requirement is not out. So let it start first then commit the numbers :)

The upgraded Jaguars, MiG27, Mirage2k and MiG 29 will serve till 2015-2020 they will start retiring though.

Here is images of report from HAL review by MOD, India.
Production plan for diff. aircrafts is given.

May be in the case of jaguars but if they goes for DRAIN - III upgradation (with new engine (f-125IN), mission computer etc at like Mig-27 they have chance to fly next 10-15yr more...

Mig-27 already 40-upgraded rest will do it....

And dear Sir you can say in the case of Mirage-2000, we are expend $ 2.1B and around $1 billon in Mig-29 for upgradation of life is about only 5-7 yr. Too expensive....:tdown:

I never specified which one will start retiring and in how many numbers right. It' s not like that every airframe is similar some might have seen more wear and tear then others Then older has to retire. Since for old models the spares will be hard to come by. IAF may decide to use some of them as spares.

$ 2.1 B for an upgrade of just 50 Mirage? As far as I know we was ready to pay 1 B but they wanted 1,5 B. I think it depends on who wins Mrca, if Rafale wins a upgrade could come as a package.

What we know for sure that will be there:

230 Su-30MKI.
126 MMRCA
40 Tejas

20 Sqd's worth roughly at 20 planes per sqad.

Balance:

100 MiG 29K and Mirage 2005/9

So a total of 25 fighter sqdrns are confirmed.

For su-30 16fc per sqd becouse in this we dnt need dual seat trainer and for rest 16+2 for one sqd.
but remember Ist 40 lca is not war fighter it use for training purpose.
