India will soon have a combat aircraft rivalling Lockheed Martin's F-35 Lightning II of the US, China's Chengdu J-20 and Russian Sukhoi Su-57. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria on Tuesday announced that the development of 5th Generation advanced multi-role combat aircraft has been launched in a massive boost to the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme.

Pitching strongly for an indigenous weapons platforms to arm the Indian Air Force (IAF), ACM Bhadauria's stress on India going ahead with its own 5th Generation stealth fighter means that IAF would not consider Su-57. He had on October 4, too, during a press conference made it clear that IAF would not go for any foreign-made 5th Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) nor any other foreign jet. Russia is actively looking for buyers for the Su-57 which has entered serial production and 76 fighters will start joining its aerospace force starting end of 2019.

The supersonic AMCA is being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The all-weather multirole AMCA is likely to have twin-engines with stealth features. It will in all probability be single-seater combat aircraft.

Along with the Rafale, Sukhoi Su-30 MKI and Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, the AMCA will be IAF's backbone in the coming decades. A naval version of the 5th Generation fighter will also be developed for Indian Navy's aircraft carriers which currently operate the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29K.

According to IAF's Air Staff Requirements (ASR) for the AMCA issued in April 2010, the aircraft must have a high degree of stealth, ability to carry weapons internally as well as externally, internal fuel capacity, be able to super cruise and perform the role of both air-to-air to air-to-ground attacks. With the AMCA will primarily engage targets at beyond visual range, it will also have a powerful thrust vectoring engine for supermanoeuvrability for better dogfighting capabilities.

according to my knowledge US's F22 has been dubbed a massive failure, as the rest of the listed 5th gen fighters.

F-22 is an expensive fighter who's project costs went way over budget but it still holds the most complex technologies and is the zenith of fighter jet design at the moment

Hope Pakistan buys F 35.

Poor Russians ditched by Gangus on SU 57

Gangus used to claim that navy is interested in Naval Version of Rafale. What happened to that?

IN never gave out an official statement that they're interested in the Rafale-M. Dassault did offer the Rafale-M for IAC-3 and media outlets started reporting that. Also, the budget for IAC-3 is still pending with MoD/DAC only after which IN can issue a tender in that regard

I wish they do  , by the time they can roll out their precious AMCA , 7th gen would be flying around.
And that too they would be able to achieve bu outsourcing the engine, radar and every other critical componenet required to make a 5th gen aircraft.

If history teaches us anything, IAF will finally develop a 5th Gen Fighter sometime in the next 40-50 years by which time the world would have already moved on to 7th/8th Gen.

.
India is missing a vital point.

Aircomabt isnt just about the best most sophisticated plane. Its about man behind the machine. Courage and tactics.
Look how on the 27th feb. Pakistan went and bombed india. Had aircraft loitering to notice the indians and then smashed them back to gunga din status

Pakistan's Project AZM will also take years to come

If project AZM is about a 5th Gen Fighter then my opinion of the planners would nosedive. Project AZM will need 10-25 years to materialize and so the focus should be on 6th Gen technology and not 5th Gen.
