The US and its close Mideast allies Israel and Saudi Arabia continue to exert pressure on Iran. Observers are mulling over the probability of a direct conflict between Tehran and Tel Aviv amid the latter's increasingly assertive rhetoric towards the Islamic Republic.

Following the reported exchange of strikes between Tehran and Tel Aviv over the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, the question arises as to whether the two Middle Eastern powers could engage in a direct military conflict.

Sputnik Iran has looked into the issue comparing the countries' military capabilities.

According to GlobalFirepower.com estimates based on CIA figures, Iran and Israel's defense budgets are $6.3 billion and $20 billion, respectively; active personnel — 534,000 (Iran) and 147,000 (Israel); total military aircraft — 505 (Iran), 596 (Israel); tank strength — 1,650 (Iran), 2,760 (Israel); total naval assets — 398 (Iran), 65 (Israel).

Iran-Israel Tensions Likely to Rise on All Fronts, Including Syria - Analysts
However, in case of a military confrontation between Iran and Israel, the main role will be played by the quality of weapons and military equipment. And here Israel has an advantage over Iran.

One needs to keep in mind that in the event of a confrontation it is unlikely that Israeli forces would launch a ground offensive against the Islamic Republic given the population ratio between the two countries — 8.3 million people (Israel) and 82 million (Iran). Therefore one might presume that Israel would resort to Air Force and, possibly, Navy missile strikes against its adversary.

For its part, Iran would also find it difficult to attack Israel by land: It is more likely that the Islamic Republic would conduct massive missile strikes on Israel from Iranian territory and use the anti-Israeli Hezbollah and Hamas movements as proxies on the ground.

Air Forces

The Islamic Republic of Iran's (IRI) combat aircraft are largely outdated, consisting of American F-4, and the F-5 fighter jets, designed in the 1950s, the F-7 — a Chinese analogue of the Soviet MiG-21 aircraft, the F-14, the Su-20, the Su-24, the Su-25 and the MiG-25, developed in the 1970-80s. Additionally, many of Iran's warplanes are unfit for active service.

Iran's newest fighter jet, Qaher-313, or Dominant-313, is unveiled by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accompanied by top officials during a ceremony, in Tehran, Iran, Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013.
However, the Iranian military-industrial complex produces a number of the domestic combat aircraft, including the Azarakhsh, Saeqeh, Tazarv. Still, according to some observers, they were designed on the basis of obsolete foreign models.

"The [IRI] Air Force is basically comprised of old US planes and [aircraft] that the Iranians managed to obtain later," Israeli Air Force retired Brig. Gen. Israel Baharav told Sputnik. "I believe that the Iranian Air Force could be taken into account only if [Israel] has to operate in Iranian airspace."

The general expressed doubts that Iranian aircraft would conduct military operations in Israeli territory.

"Great distance and other factors play a role," he suggested. "They [the Iranians], of course, could try, but the capabilities of their aircraft are extremely limited in case of accomplishing such a task. Their missiles pose a greater threat to us [Israel] than their aviation."

For its part, Israel has US-made F-15s, F-16s, and F-35s in its arsenal. The Israeli air fleet was built with the direct participation of the country's scientists and specialists. According to aviation experts, the Israeli Air Force is one of the five strongest air forces in the world, alongside the US, Russia, China, and the UK.

Navy Forces

The IRI reportedly has 21 Ghadir-class mini submarines, specifically designed to sail within the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. In addition, it operates three Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines purchased from Russia in the 1990s, according to The National Interest.

While enjoying superiority in the number of warships, Iran loses to its potential adversary in their military capacity. The Israeli Navy possesses six Dolphin-class diesel-electric submarines developed and constructed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG. They are equipped with cruise missiles that are capable of carrying nuclear warheads. It significantly increases Israel's strategic potential ensuring its superiority over the naval forces of its Mideast neighbors.

Nuclear Weapons

It is an open secret that Israel is a Middle Eastern nuclear power that reportedly has between 100 and 500 atomic warheads in possession. In addition, the country has been developing its own ballistic missiles since 1963. In 1989 Tel Aviv successfully tested its Jericho-2 ballistic missile capable of striking targets at a distance of 800-1,500 kilometers.

Why Trump Cracks Down on Iran, Turns a Blind Eye to Israel's Nukes
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) also possesses airborne means of delivering nuclear weapons (including the F-16 and the A-4N Sky Hawk). Israel is the only country in the Middle East that is believed to be able to conduct a nuclear strike by land, sea or air.

As for the threat posed by Iranian missiles, Tel Aviv could potentially resist an Iranian strike due to the Iron Dome, a mobile all-weather air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries. The system has repeatedly demonstrated its efficiency while intercepting Hezbollah and Hamas' rockets. While being tested, the Iron Dome had managed to withstand even more powerful strikes.

In short, the Israeli military might appear to be superior to that of the Islamic Republic.

All-Out War Remains Unlikely

Tensions have recently been brewing between the two states over what Israel regards as Tehran's military expansion in Syria. In February 2018, Israel allegedly intercepted what it called an Iranian drone and then launched an airstrike in Syria resulting in the downing of an Israeli warplane.

In early April, the Israeli Air Force attacked Syria's T-4 air base, which claimed the lives of seven Iranian servicemen. In May the two countries reportedly exchanged a series of strikes over the Golan Heights. In the aftermath Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman reported that the country's forces struck "nearly all the Iranian infrastructure in Syria." In response, Abolfazl Hassan Beigi, a member of the Iranian National Security and Foreign Policy Parliament's Committee claimed that the Islamic Republic had nothing to do with the airstrikes on Israel. Beigi stressed that Iran "has no military presence in Syria, no bases."

However, a direct military confrontation between the two powers still remains unlikely, observers believe.

"Both Israel and Iran recognize how costly a war would be for each of them, and in the case of Iran, also for their proxies in Syria and Lebanon. I expect both sides prefer to avoid getting there, which in some respects serves as mutual deterrence," opined Rachel Brandenburg of the US-based influential Atlantic Council think tank.

Iran needs better Air force and Navy , Israel will definitely Rule the skies , but on Ground Iran will give Israel a bloody nose because of their Vast CM arsenal , more Man power .. Iran also needs to improve their Tanks and buy more Advance Tanks like T-90's or T-99A from China .

.
Stalemate.

They're too far from each other for either side to launch a ground invasion or fight using their navy's.

The real assets will be air power and missiles. Israel can easily start pounding Iran with their superior aircraft, but Iran does have a pretty nasty stash of missiles which it can fire on Israel in minimal numbers so they don't cause enough damage to warrant Israel going nuclear, but rather put them on edge enough to make Israel desist from any further aggression. Iran's anti air defences could also probably down a few Israeli aircraft. Militants are also a useful asset Iran could use, but Israel could also respond with assassinations.

I don't see any side getting anywhere if a war broke out. If anything, it could be detrimental for Israel since Iran might genuinely go for nuclear weapons (or fast-track their development if they're not already attempting to acquire them).

. . . .
Iran is located 1000km away from Israel

And neither Iran or Israel have the capability to invade the other country and actually hold the other sides territory

Yes Israel is a tiny country with nukes vs Iran that's has the capability and knowhow to build nukes in under a year and is larger than U.K., France, Germany & Italy combined and since 3 nukes will practically wipe out Israel as a country then no half sane Israeli leader would ever nuke Iran because then Iranians will actually nuke and wipe out Israel in under a year

And aside from throwing missiles at each other neither country can actually have a decisive victory against the other and at the end of the day that's all it comes down to who has the more missiles whether it be Air to Ground missiles or Land Attack Cruise missiles or Ballistic Missiles
And Israeli's may have far better means of defense against missiles but at the end of the day I'm willing to bet that Iran has far more missiles!

And Israeli F-35's by the time they reach Iran's borders will be restricted in terms of the altitude they can fly at and the speed they can fly at
And if they carry payloads externally they won't be stealth and internally they are restricted to two internal bays with a capacity of up to 5,700 lb (2,590 kg) basically 4 ~1000lb payloads or 2 ~2000lb payloads

And Israeli's currently have 9 of them and if 1/3 get configured for air to air mode that's just not a lot of fire power to able to make much of a difference and Iran can easily out match them in the number of missiles they can throw at the Israeli's

For the cost of 100 T-90's Iran can build 1000 semi autonomous Quadcopters equipped with imaging software & armed with ATGM or other weapons + 1000 armed semi autonomous UGV's +100 mobile command and controls centers to operate them + 1000 Armed and Armored 1 ton tactical vehicles and still have well over $100 Million USD left over to build Helos, UCAV's or Iranian Tanks or other equipment....
So a $4Million USD Russian Tank is not really a good investment

As for Iran vs Israel at the end of the day both countries are 1000km apart and for Israeli's to be a threat to most Iranian targets they would need a fleet of fighters with a combat radius over 1500km

Currently the only Fighters Israeli's have that could pose any kind of a viable threat +200km inside Iranian territory are 25 F-15I + 10 F-35's and even if the Israeli's get another 40 F-35's they still don't have a significant size Air Force to go up against current Iranian fighters and Iran's Air Defense and deliver good size payloads to a significant number of targets
And in response to every Israeli Fighter that enters Iran's Airspace Iran could easily retaliate by firing 10 missiles for every Israeli aircraft that enters Iran's airspace.

This doesn't change the fact that we need to upgrade our Air Force but that has nothing to do with Israel because against their Air Defenses Iranian stealth UCAV's and Missiles will have a far better chance than Iranian fighter jets

Dont take Israeli Airfoce Lightly, their F-16 fleet is also equipped with modern weapons and Systems .. Iran needs to spend a lot of money on its Armed forces modernization and do it fast .. ATGM or drones can not take the place for Tanks, similar to Tanks can not take place of ATGM or Drones .

Assad and Hezbollah. But in any war on a free Muslim nation, only one nation should get involved, the one being attacked. If you want to help out your friends, send arms before the war or covertly during the war. The whole of Europe was lost in WWII because the fascists joined the nazis. Alliances should only be to supply each other for war. Loosing one war could = losing the entire Middle East to a zionist 'peace' would be a disaster.

Israels airforce means little if they can't use it against Iranian mainland. Iran's airdefence could probably eat their whole airforce a few times over. Only a fool believes they have the capability to come 1000's of KM and penetrate Iranian air space.

This is the second time I am asking you to spell Iran with "I". Notice how she use captials for all the other nations but not Iran lol. It seems some Iranian did something to burn you badly at some point in your life?

SAMs rule the skies. Modern battles are fought in the air and sea. Land battles are a distant 3rd.

If Iran floods the countryside with domestic made SAM systems, it is a stalemate in a one on one war.

Israel has no hope to "pound" Iran using their airforce. People focus too much on Iran airforce alone. Iranian airdefences can take care of Israeli planes with ease. Saying "Iran's anti air defences could also probably down a few Israeli aircraft" shows you don't know much about Iran's airdefence bro. Go see my comments to Starlord in this thread.
