Haqqani is a much respected academician in both India and the US for his anti-Pakistan views. In his analysis, however, he has forgotten to mention that Pakistan’s military strength will continue to remain disproportionate to its needs as India’s military build-up, many times bigger than Pakistan’s, is Pakistan-centric. A bulk of its land forces and air assets has been deployed alongside its border with Pakistan. Pakistan needs to make substantial acquisitions of military hardware to be able to create a credible deterrence in conventional sense. The problem is that defense has never been a national priority for Pakistan politicians. Sadly, education and health, is also not a priority. Every year, major chunk of national resources goes to subsidize the loss making public enterprises which are a resting place for incompetent cronies and potential political supporters.
