Basic Knowledge:-
Specialized shipping can be divided into two types, most crudely described as Ships and Craft.
In general the Ships carry the troops from the port of embarkation to the drop point for the assault.
In general the Craft carry the troops from the ship to the shore.

Categorization Method:-
Helicopter aviation Vs. Landing craft assets

Landing Craft Assets:-
Bow ramp to discharge vehicles onto beach Vs. Fold-able dock to load & discharge smaller crafts.

We are going to discuss all Crafts first then Ships.

Crafts:-
Landing Craft Control (LCC):-
A large special purpose Ship or Craft and also known as Amphibious Command Ships. Used as general command Ships, and serve as floating headquarters for the various combatant commands. A floating command post with advanced communications equipment and extensive combat information spaces.

Landing Craft Infantry (LCI):-
Used to transport troops only. They beach themselves to bring their troops directly ashore. They are special purpose vessels.

Landing Craft Mechanized (LCM):-
Used to transport mechanized columns only. They beach themselves to bring mechanized vehicles ashore. They are special purpose vessels.

Ships:-
Landing Platform Helicopters (LPH):-
Used to transport troops only. General purpose helicopter-carrying amphibious assault ships. They are used to transport forces personnel and equipment. These ships uses helicopters to transport forces personnel and equipment. These ships only carry utility and transport helicopters. Also known as Landing Helicopter Assault (LHA).

Landing Platform Attack (LPA):-
Used to transport troops and mechanized columns as well. They carry their own fleet of landing crafts (LCIs / LCMs) to bring troops ashore. They does not have any hanger or aviation facility.

Landing Platform Dock (LPD):-
Used to transport troops and mechanized columns as well. A warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force. These ships are generally designed to transport troops into a war zone by sea using landing crafts & helicopters both. These ships carry their own landing crafts (LCIs / LCMs) & utility and transport helicopters. Besides having a helicopter deck, these ships also have a aviation hanger to store helicopters.

Landing Ship Dock (LSD):-
Used to transport troops and mechanized columns as well. A warship to transport and launch landing craft and amphibious vehicles or helicopters. These ships have a helicopter deck only to operate helicopters.

Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD):-
Multipurpose amphibious assault ships which are capable of operating helicopters and have a well deck. These vessels are built with a full flight deck similar in appearance to an aircraft carrier to operate helicopters. These vessels can carry utility, attack and all other types of helicopters as Helicopter Carrier.

Landing Ship Tank (LST):-
Used to transport mechanized columns specially but troops as well. These ships directly deploys the equipment ashore. They neither carry landing crafts (LCIs / LCMs) nor helicopters.
