Staff Correspondent: The Indian High Commission yesterday launched ‘Eid Visa Camp’, the first of its kind in the history of Bangladesh-India bilateral relationship, drawing huge crowd.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla formally inaugurated the camp, aimed at furthering easing the visa process.

The visa camp is being held at the New Chancery Complex, High Commission of India, in Baridhara and will remain open from 8am to 2pm till June 16, except June 10.“Today is a special day,” the high commissioner said mentioning that such initiative shows attention that visa occupies in two countries relationship and the magnitude of Indian visa operations in
Bangladesh. Around 6,000 visa seekers were there outside and inside the camp on the inaugural day. Other than exceptional cases and doubts, the visa applicants will be given a one-year multiple visa, the high commissioner told reporters before the formal inauguration of the camp. The High Commission issues the largest number of visas as compared to any other Indian missions anywhere in the world and probably more than any other mission in Bangladesh, said the Indian diplomat.

“This is because of our unique relationship,” Shringla said adding that more than one million people from Bangladesh went to India last year. The second largest number of tourists went to India from Bangladesh in 2015, the high commissioner said mentioning that every day he meets friends and people in Bangladesh who like to visit India for shopping, studies, medical treatment and for meeting friends and relatives. “It’s always our endeavor to ease this movement of people. We know people in Bangladesh would like to visit India during the Eid holidays. We want India to be your most preferred destination because we are the closest neighbors,” Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said the people of India are very close to the hearts of Bangladeshi people.

“It’s another sign of strengthening people-to-people ties. Through such initiative, the relations between the two countries will further be strengthened,” he said while addressing the function as the chief guest. Khan said he had a discussion with the High Commission how the visa process can further be eased. “I really appreciate the initiative taken for easing the visa process and making people’s mobility easier.” State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said they have discussed the visa issue in their every meeting with Indian counterparts at various levels and there has been assurance from the Indian part to make the process easier and hassle-free one. “This is a very brave move and very challenging move,” he said thanking the Indian High Commission for taking up visa camp initiative. Alam said there is a sign that the Indian side is not shying away rather they are taking initiatives to ease the visa process.
“Now not only visa, any problem can be addressed through sitting together. There is no such problem between our relations which can remain unresolved,” he said referring to their discussion with Indian counterparts. The visa seekers who got chance to submit their applications on the first day of the camp expressed their happiness.
“This is a good opportunity for us. I’m applying for visa with my son. I came here at 5am yet I’m happy,” said Sumitra Paul.

Another visa applicant – Rajib – said he is happy to see such initiative but mentioned that the visa authority should grant visas to all members of the family. “It doesn’t make any sense for me, if I’m given visa but my family members who’ll apply together with me are denied.” A raffle draw was also held for the visa applicants. Three winners were given Jet Airways tickets to visit India with their respective partners. Himangshu Chandra won two Dhaka-Kolkata-Dhaka tickets, Rina Afsar got Dhaka-Mumbai-Dhaka tickets while Rajib Khan won Dhaka-Delhi-Dhaka air tickets. Jet Airways is also offering exclusive discounts for travelers who book their tickets at the Visa Camp.

During the Eid Visa Camp, applicants can submit their tourist visa applications on a walk-in basis without prior appointment date. Special counters have been set up inside the camp by the Indian Visa Application Center which is run and operated by the State Bank of India to accept Visa Application forms.

Eid visa camp opens for Bangladeshis

It will ease Indian visa process for Eid holidaymakers
Diplomatic Correspondent

The Indian High Commission yesterday began a 12-day “Eid Visa Camp” to help Bangladeshis get visas with ease if they wish to travel to the neighbouring country during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.

On the first day, several thousand people flocked to the camp set up at New Chancery Complex, High Commission of India, in the capital's Baridhara and submitted their tourist visa applications without a prior appointment date or e-token.

The camp, first of its kind in the history of Bangladesh-India relations, saw an overwhelming response as people seeking visa could just walk into the premises with all the required documents and submit their applications at the special counters opened for the camp by the Indian Visa Application Centre.

The visa seekers were given e-token instantly.

Such a move reflects the magnitude of Indian visa operations in Bangladesh, said Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla.

The High Commission here issues the largest number of visas compared to any other Indian missions anywhere in the world and probably grants visas more than any other mission in Bangladesh, he said while speaking at the inaugural session.

"It's another sign of strengthening people-to-people ties. Through such an initiative, the relations between the two countries will further be strengthened," Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said, while addressing the function as the chief guest.

Indian visa seekers normally fill in an application form and submit it online to get an appointment date but the procedure gets troublesome because of heavy traffic on the designated website. And so people seek help of unauthorised agents or middlemen to get appointment dates and e-token for at least Tk 3,000 to Tk 4,000.

The visa camp will remain open until June 16 (except June 10 that is Friday) from 8:00am to 2:00pm.

During the inauguration, three people won couple tickets by lottery of Jet Airways on the routes -- Dhaka-Kolkata-Dhaka, Dhaka-Delhi-Dhaka and Dhaka-Mumbai-Dhaka.

Jet Airways is also offering exclusive discounts for booking tickets at the camp.

"We know people in Bangladesh would like to visit India during the Eid holidays. We want India to be your most preferred destination because we are the closest neighbours," the Indian envoy said.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam, who was the special guest, said visa issues had been discussed with the Indian side that gave an assurance of making the process easier and hassle-free.

"This [visa camp] is a very brave and challenging move," he said, thanking the Indian High Commission for the initiative.

Bangladesh tourists are welcome to India, especially first timers (we know its the dream of many Bangladeshis but the line up is long and incomes may get in the way).

Earning more money from Bangladesh is good for India....to balance what we are hosting here. Also strengthens BAL regime as people develop more taste for Indian goods, services and culture. Keep the Bangladesh elite and growing middle class in India's pocket as much as possible and good relations are guaranteed. It also exposes/silences those in other threads that are claiming WB is like Somalia compared to Bangladesh and Dhaka is 10 times richer than Kolkata and other such nonsense.

Hopefully Teesta issue can be resolved soon and reasonably and that will be the final major quarrel sorted out.

Actually we need to stay away from India as much as possible.Visiting India is a major health risk considering all those free flowing human excreta across India.

Since when a Bangladeshi is welcomed in India, maybe in your state but in north we don't want to see them around us. I don't care if they are tourist or Patient.

Even Mumbaikars don't want them around, their sports journalist can't have a hotel room in Mumbai.

So your so called "good relationship" is only limited to Govt alone not people, especially us, we are worse than BSF and Assam Rifles in this regard.

Please stand outside the large lines and inform your countrymen. Do your civic duty. Till then we are going to go "cha ching" several times.
Very few Bangladeshi know about 60 percent Indian practice open defecation.I told my some friends about these in some chat. They at first refused to believe, then became astonished when they got the proof.

Blahh blahhh blahh... :bunny:

Bangladeshis contribute to India's tourism sector. You should thank us for giving our money to build toilets in India.

We don't want the Bangladeshis that are permanent illegals/illegal seasonal migrants or decide they can turn up at a fancy hotel at any time and expect a room for cheap....and complain about being thrown out when refused (i.e no concept of market economics or reserving hotel rooms).

But regular middle class Bangladeshis tha

t come to enjoy Kolkata and whats its like to be in a place below 1000 people per sq km, spend their hard earned money on our goods and services (on top of what they already import) are fine. They are not ungrateful twits or hardcore jihadists for the most part (which seems to be a good number of board members here...what do you do its a defence forum)....since they got their jobs and families to worry about back home.

I was talking about our region (Northern most India) not Kolkata.

Can't say about Kolkata, may be @Rain Man is OK to see them around.

But i doubt, since there is nothing in common between Kolkata and Bangladesh the former is known as the land of elite Bhadra lok and descendant of Tagore, Bose and Ram mohan Roy.

.
Also strengthens BAL regime as people develop more taste for Indian goods, services and culture.

Bangladeshi tourists visiting India will leave a negative impact on these things as people will realize Bollywood is not the real India. Most of the people I know who visited India didn't have a pleasant experience.

Keep the Bangladesh elite and growing middle class in India's pocket as much as possible and good relations are guaranteed.

The elites and upper-middle class hardly visit India for tourism purposes, limited to business tours only.

Hey, Tagore's family belongs to Jessore, Bangladesh. Mamta's family is also from Jessore. Veteran actress Rakhee Gulzar's father is from Bangladesh. Her and Gulzar's daughter name is Meghna Gulzar. Meghna is a major river in Bangladesh. They named their daughter after Bangladesh's river Meghna. Basically all Bengali 'elites' of India somehow belongs to Bangladesh.

@Rain Man also belongs to Bangladesh.

.
I seriously hope they willfully return to their highly sanitized and clean country and doesnt take much effort on our part to make them return.

Very few Indians know Bangladesh is above sea level and its something more than where the rivers with the open defecation flow to.

Anyways the open defecation rate in India is now below 50%. By 2019 it will be close to or at 0% given implementation record of current govt thus far. It will clean Bangladesh water supply immensely. Win win.

What is this suppose to mean ? They are our people of Bharat, represent our culture, there was no Bangladesh before 1971.

The land is known by its people not the other way around.

You produce your own Tagore, Bose, Gulzar and stop associating with us Indians.

Have you seen Rakhee Gulzar taking pride to be associated with the land now known as BD.

Completely different from what @Rain Man was saying as to all the large eyed Bangladesh tourists that do lots of sight-seeing, get all excited and come back again and again to do more shopping (greater selection and less chance of import tax on the goods).

The original article also paints a different picture. I mean why do so many Bangladeshis return and return whenever they can back to India to spend more and more? As another Bangladeshi poster said in another thread...even the horlicks you buy in Bangladesh is from India. No wonder.

I doubt it when Indian people uses govt. provided toilet to do all other stuff (like cow dung storage  ) except for the intended purpose.

Yes we know how you doubt the 40%+ reported absolute poverty rate of Bangladesh by World Bank and majorly lower average consumption per capita of Bangladeshis compared to Indians.

You have doubts whenever something contradicts your notion of what Bangladesh and India is...maybe you will one day leave and see just how Bangladeshis love to pass themselves off as Indian (or at least non-Bangladeshi) when they are in the West. It explains why these masses throng to visit India at the first opportunity. Don't they have better things to spend their money on? Please tell your countrymen to stop their strange addiction to us and see how far you get.
