Five militants suspected of planning a big attack in the Afghan capital Kabul have been arrested, officials say.

A truck carrying 10 tonnes of explosives was seized from the group, said a National Directorate of Security spokesman.

The men, thought to belong to the Haqqani militant network, were planning to assassinate the second vice-president, Mohammad Khalili, he said.

A video detailing the group's plans has also reported to have been found.

The militants were planning to target crowded areas of the capital with the explosives, which were hidden under the truck's cargo of potatoes, the NDS said.

"If this amount of explosives had been used, it could have caused large-scale bloodshed," a spokesman, Nazari, who only uses one name, told the Reuters news agency.

Three of those arrested were Pakistani nationals, while the other two were Afghans, he said.

Last week, 51 people died in a wave of co-ordinated attacks by insurgents in Kabul and three other provinces.
