Huawei's MateBook X has a sleek aluminium chassis that'll be available in gold, grey and pink.

Smartphone maker Huawei just announced a wide range of laptops and tablets to take on tech giants Apple and Microsoft.

The new devices launched by the Chinese firm include the MateBook X and Matebook D laptops along with a revamped version of last year’s Windows 10 tablet, the MateBook E.

The highlight of Huawei’s event, however, was its first ever clamshell laptop — the MateBook X which seems to target Apple’s flagship MacBook line.

The Windows 10 laptop is the first fan-less 13-inch model with an Intel U-Series processor. It has a sleek aluminium chassis that’ll be available in gold, grey and pink. It terms of its size and dimensions, the new laptop is similar to Apple’s MacBook.

On the hardware side, the Huawei laptop features a power button that also doubles as a fingerprint sensor, similar to some Huawei phones, and it works with Windows Hello. In addition to this, it’s also the first laptop to have Dolby’s Atmos sound system, which features integrated software and hardware solutions for superior sound quality.

With the option to get an Intel Core i7 CPU and 8GBs of RAM, the new laptop also pegs itself against the more up spec MacBook Pro. The new device, however, doesn’t come cheap with a starting price of $1,399 and can go up to $1,699.

Huawei also unveiled a mid-ranged laptop the MateBook D, that features a larger but lower-resolution screen and a Nvidia GeForce 930MX GPU for better gaming graphics. The MateBook D also comes in much cheaper at $799.

The Matebook E tablet, on the other hand is an updated version of last year’s model. The Windows 10 tablet was notable for its iPad Pro-like chassis, but doesn’t include the keyboard case in its base price. Available in gray and gold, the device takes on Apple’s iPad Pro and has a premium, high-end look and feel.

All in all, Huawei’s latest line of devices shows the company is capitalising on its gains in the smartphone market and now aims to take on tech giants Microsoft and Apple in the PC sector.
