Xinjiang is very quiet and peaceful, but there was a time around 10 year ago, this region was on the very brink of falling into anarchy with rampant terrorist attacks and those attacks were not confined in Xinjiang, terrorists travel far and wide waging those attacks all over China, including the iconic Tiananmen Square in Beijjing.
Xinjiang local officers and leaders put their lives and families in danger (so local officials and renowned mullahs had their whole family killed by plannd targetted attacks) to fight back terrorists, many gave their life for this cause and most of those martyred were Uighur officers and local officials.

Of course it is Islamic. It is related to Islam which is used by those extremists to spread their own ignorance and self conceit. That is why they are also called Islamists. Islam is their tool for their agendas. Those who really follow the principles of Islam and focus on its spiritual practice are called Muslims.
