How Pakistan International Airlines Helped Start Emirates

Emirates is one of the world’s leading airlines… but did you know that when they were founded that they got help from another airline in the world? PIA, Pakistan International Airlines, offered crucial support to the airline when it first began and has since been a close partner ever since.

What are the details?
Emirates was founded way back in 1984 as a response to Gulf Air cutting back on routes to Dubai. Gulf Air became concerned that it was just sending through passengers from regional areas to Dubai, only for them to board a competitor long-haul flight to Europe and Asia.

Thus the government of Dubai decided to make their own airline in order to ensure connectivity to the region. But, despite having the funding to do so, the airline lacked critical expertise and, obviously, aircraft.

Maurice Flanagan was brought onboard with the ambitious mission to launch an airline for Dubai in just five months and only with $10 million seed funding. According to Emirates today, he was told back then to make the airlinelook good, be good, and make money”.

But without staff or even aircraft, how could he make a new airline so quickly?

In stepped Pakistan International Airlines.

What did Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) bring to Emirates?
The new venture approached PIA with its idea of a new airline and asked for as much support as they could lend. With the budget of $10 million, Emirates would be able to rent two aircraft, receive administrative support and engineering assistance in running the airline

The two aircraft that the new airline Emirates rented were:

  • A Boeing 737–300
  • An Airbus A300B4-200
It would use these first aircraft to open a route to Karachi, Pakistan. The two planes would be operated by PIA but with Emirates livery. As Emirates didn’t have any crew or staff yet, they would be flown by PIA pilots and with their crew on board. With the additional training provided by PIA, new crew members would slowly be recruited by Emirates.

Emirates would use these aircraft to fly to Mumbai and Delhi in its first year. From here they would also fly to Amman, Colombo, Cairo, Dhaka, Male, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Damascus, Jeddah, Kuwait over the next five years.

Emirates began in1985 with two leased planes. Today we connect 147destinations on 5 continents with 240 planes and we have 267 more on order

Emirates would also receive additional support from the government of Dubai in the form of two leased Boeing 727s, which you can read about here.

But Emirates would not have its own airline fleet until 1987 when they got their first owned aircraft, an Airbus A310. They would use this plane to open up a route to London by the end of the year.

Emirates has had fantastic success and become one of the biggest power-players in the aviation industry, but we can’t forget their humble beginnings and PIA gave them a step up right at the start.

Its been 35 Years. PIA need to get over it, and move on.

If it hadn't been PIA, it would've been someone else because the Emirate of Dubai had/has deep pockets.

I meet a lotta people telling me that Emirates owes* them (PIA) something for their success. Seriously!

That's some b.s. right there. Emirates has success because they invested money and time on improving their quality. They didn't just jump on the bandwagon & start ordering B777's & a380's.

They even went for B767's for quite a while and never entertained narrow-body aircrafts like 737's & 320's.

*If today Emirates decides to 'gift' PIA with some 10-odd B777's a 'Thank You', PIA will find 10-odd ways to screw that up too.

So, to PIA, you've dug yourself into a hole. Find a way of getting out of it.

Who cares...PIA,What youhave you done since then???...

Stop livingin the past.... stop wallowing in past glory and sulking on you current predicament...

PIA's death is because of one thing... CORRUPTION!

As with most things from Pakistan... CORRUPTION!!

Emirartes owes PIA nothing... it was a commerical deal and nothing more

The main take away is to show how low PIA has become.. it was state sponsored with all the advantages yet i would not travel on it even if some one gave me a free ticket especially on international routes.....

Jbh, people should stop dwelling in the past, and the favored Arabs have done are also countless

UAE is a small country and it had to rely on the experienced staff from rest of the world. Now Emirate is one of the best airline in the world. While PIA has only recruited political appointees with no regard to technical skill or competence. PIA is a bloated airline with army of staff that is not needed but have to be subsidized. In PIA you don't need competence to do the job but a recommendation letter from a politician.

PIA is a curse. Kinda like the one you read 'bout in books & see in Horror movies.

You know wha., PIA is a Horror movie itself.

Back when PIA had leased its 02 Aircrafts (B737-300 & the a300-300) to Emirates, that was when PIA was at full strength as far fleet is concerned - which would also explain them parting ways from two aircrafts for that period. Imagine, we had nearly 14 B747's (Jumbos). We had other wide-body aircarfts like the a300's & a310's. We were covering a number of destinations & then...it started. The revolving door with PPP & PML-N.

The two of 'em are like a virus. A plague. Termites. Rust on your favorite car. They made more bad deals than a your local Burger King on a weekend.

...and if those two aren't enough, you have their cronies in the Unions.

PIA is an abomination.

However, all is not lost. Sure the business plan needs to be revived, and I do not believe that the IFE System is all that important, considering the amount it'll cost to replace 'em on the B777's.

However, you gotta go with the 01 Type Fleet. Its gotta be Boeing OR airbus. Period.

Its kinda like we discuss on the Military side. There is a lot of cost that goes into Training.

A B777 Flight Deck is similar to recent variants of the B737's (NG's & Max). On the flipside, you got the entire airbus Family that are completely identical in the Flight Deck. You got trainings for Flight Deck, Cabin Crew & Engineers. That cost can be lowered if you have the 01 Type.

But no..., we gotta please everyone & get kickbacks in the process too.

The current chief brought back some aircrafts lying and rusting in storages. Also bought two more. He had outlined his strategy till 2023. Lets if the next follows his strategy.

Those my friend are a320's which PIA acquired barely 5 Years ago. They're new. There is NO rust on 'em.

I'm not accusing him, but its not like he's bringing back something from the dead. Those aircrafts were parked in the remote area as PIA needed parts & couldn't afford new ones. Hence, let the cannibalization process start.

I suppose he got PIA out of that ditch, but there are more hurdles than this Chief can handle. He's got grey hair right now, by the time his run is over with PIA, he won't have any hair to call grey.

He has been removed. The people he fired on fake degrees, their case is now in hands of cabinet and they will likely be hired back so you can decide where PIA is being headed.
