How India botched up with Erdogan’s visit?
Global Village Space |

M. K. Bhadrakumar |

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs schedules high-level visits by foreign dignitaries on the basis of clear-cut diplomatic objectives. A visit for visit’s sake is seldom the case. In all respects, Turkish President Recep Erdogan’s visit should have been carefully planned. Yet, how come we botched it up?

Turkey: An important country for India
Turkey’s stance at least in three directions impacts India’s vital concerns – namely, its stance on India’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, India’s quest for permanent membership of the UN Security Council and, of course, on the Kashmir issue.

Turkey is an important regional power, a member of the G-20, a country with a flourishing economy and dynamic business culture that approximates far closer to the OECD standards than India in development, an ancient country with a profound history and an influential voice in the ‘Muslim world’.

Most important, Turkey’s ‘Ostpolitik’ under Erdogan’s leadership is of interest, especially its close ties with Pakistan, China and Russia, and, secondly, Turkey’s stance at least in three directions impacts India’s vital concerns – namely, its stance on India’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group, India’s quest for permanent membership of the UN Security Council and, of course, on the Kashmir issue (where it has had a stated position that has been supportive of Pakistan.)

Erdogan: A powerful leader
Indeed, Erdogan himself is a powerful leader who has consistently enjoyed 50% support in democratic elections. He is not an easy man to handle – given to outspokenness and whimsicality at times. But he is a decisive leader who takes a personal interest in promoting Turkey’s economic and business ties with foreign countries and there is much-untapped potential for trade and investment between Turkey and India.

The Turks are a very proud people. The point is, they have a proud history. Turkey never became a colony of western powers, nor was it conquered, ransacked, and subjugated by successive foreign armies. India’s medieval rulers sought protection from Turkey.

India asked for trouble with the injudicious scheduling of the state visit by the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades just ahead of Erdogan’s. No matter what we say, Turks (or the international community) would only have perceived it as a deliberate slight to Erdogan.

This seems to be the only ' flaw' the author could point out.

Not much, state visits are not ' come over in the evening for a drink' type events. They are planned well in advance. Maybe the Cypriot Pres did not have a time slot.

The author seems to have got a permanent slot on the Pak site hence he needs something to 'sell' on the site.

OR .. maybe a message was intended to be sent.

In anycase if the Turk Pres & his diplomats in India had no probs, why should it bother anyone else ?

No big deal

well simply put they will not support indian nsg bid ...

Erdogan has given very valuable, actionable and practical advice to Indians for a bright future. But, alas. Indians under the leadership of Arrogant Modi are blinded by ambition for power. Without solving Kashmir problem India can NEVER EVER be a great country, period.

And the south Tibet problem.

@wanglaokan and @Aasimkhan South Tibet and Kashmir are not our but your respective problems. Let us see whether we can become one great country without compromising on both. :)

Since we enjoy almost all relaxation, NSG membership is nothing a case of prestige for us now. Well we can wait too long for that. :)

you think these are not problems only till the time these will dismember your MAHA BHARTA dreams, disintegration of India will start from Kashmir, then Indian held Punjab and then rest of the states.

Look from where both India and Pakistan started and who lost what through these years ?? :azn:

This mindset is not gonna take you anywhere. First try and hold together what you have at present and become stable, then think about dismembering others. LOL :p:

Turkey is useless and a nobody on Kashmir. Turkey is supporting Pakistan on Kashmir since 1964, yet has failed to carry even an iota of change in Kashmir issue:
Turkey unequivocally supports Pakistan’s stand on the Kashmir issue. (Turkish President Cemal Gursel – April 3, 1964).

This shows how weak and pathetic Turkey's influence on the Kashmir issue and India is and that even in 50 years India paid no heed to useless Turkey.

India’s medieval rulers sought protection from Turkey.

You mean foreign invaders who occupied chunks of land here and there across India. Not Indian rulers. My land has remained unconquered by the scourge of foreign invasions.

Turkey is less useful to India than even Palestine. Sorry Turks. Your nation is beautiful, your people are good and your food and alcohol is nice but geopolitically not important.

Looks like Mr Bhadrakumar didn't have his morning coffee.

Surprising, considering that we choose to keep all our ties strictly bilateral; one country's visit or relations don't link up to any other country's relations with India.

Turkey is a regional power of Eurasian region and is an important nation; it has a powerful economy and a young population with high levels of education and increasingly empowered manufacturing industry. But here, Turkish head of state is our state guest.

We accord the same importance and facilities to all our foreign state guests, which means that even if Rwanda's president comes to India tomorrow, he or she will also enjoy the same amenities and treatment that Mr. Erdogan received.

India and Turkey have a bilateral relationship and Turkey itself has been vocal about keeping it bilateral.

If Turkey prefer to call the state of Kashmir as Pakistani and continues to falsely support Pakistan on the basis of just religiosity, then I see no harm in entertaining another foreign head of state; especially that of a country who has very friendly ties with India.

Cyprus is a peaceful country and is a very attractive tourism destination. I don't see what threat Erdogan could get from Cyprus militarily or geo-politically without Greece's direct involvement.

Hold onto your horses, man. The decision is still not come. The commercial talks between India and Turkey were highly successful.

Let's see what the Government of Turkey has to say now that certain things have been cleared in the recent visit.

Turkey is less useful to India than even Palestine. Sorry Turks. Your nation is beautiful, your people are good and your food and alcohol is nice but geopolitically not important.

Every nation is important when seen from the angle PM Modi is seeing. Cyprus, Rwanda, Turkey and even Nicaragua is important on this.

What we can do is hope to address Turkey concerns, in exchange for a similar deed from Ankara.

If it benefits both of us, then nothing better.

Tibet is a disputed territory and can only be resolved when China comes on table talk with His Highness Dalai Lama.

You mean His Holiness. He's not the political authority any more; he's the spiritual guru of our faith of Vajrayana sect of Buddhism.
