How government apathy bled the Indian Navy

Strategic experts claim that successive Indian governments have been obsessed about designing land-based plans to counter Pakistan and China and the navy always took a back seat.

The Indian Navy is supposed to guard the 7,500 km-long coastline, 1,200 plus islands, and 2.2 million sq km of exclusive economic zone (EEZ). It is also meant to control the Indian Ocean region which contains one-third of the world's population and 40% of the world's oil and gas reserves.

“Induction of submarines into our navy was done more or less in an episodic way. The last of the submarines of the Sindhughosh class was inducted in 1999, 2000. And since then, there has been no new induction, which shows huge lacuna on the part of the government in assessing the situation,” said defence and strategic expert Commodore (retired) C Uday Bhaskar.

“If the Scorpenes get delayed any further, the Indian Navy will be left with just about four or five submarines by 2020,” said a senior navy officer, requesting anonymity.

Six Scorpene submarines are currently being built in Mumbai in collaboration with French firm DCNS. The first of these will be ready by 2016-17.

“The Indian Navy is more like a Cinderella Service. It paid a heavy price, because of the inability of bureaucrats and politicians to arrive at the right strategic assessment,” said Bhaskar.

In the last 10 years, this government has done as much damage to our armed forces/paramilitary as much as we didn't have even with fighting all the wars with Pakistan and China. :pissed:

1- MiG crashes
2- Helicopter crashes
3- Maoist attacks intensified like never before
4- Delay of defence platforms
5- Cross border firings at both LAC and LOC.
6- beheading of soldiers at LOC
7- increased terror attacks in J&K against troops and people.
8- Inaction on Sindhurakshak resulting in getting 18 precious lives lost.

So who's the bigger enemy of Indian Armed Forces? Pakistan? China? Bangladesh? Or... MMS and Co?

Ill cite the following as the biggest failures of the UPA in the defence area:

Army:

No new artillery
No new IFVs
No infantry modernization
No new Air defense guns

Navy:
Scorpene purchase botched
No secondary submarine purchases
Gorshkov debacle (cost and time overrun)

Airforce:
Massive delay in Mig 21 replacement
MMRCA still not signed
LCA still not operational
Light helicopters still not chosen

Thats just off the top of my head

UPA wont sign any deals as they are scared of a new scam that media might come up with.

actually In is most efficient wing of Armed force..yet,they generally face negligence due to the fact that IN is far superior in this region and we barely face threat from Sea(from politician's perspective)..they generally give importance to Army and AF more, due to the fact that we have two hostile neighbour with land border..but IN has far more clean image than both IA and IAF and they are far less whimsical than other two branches..also,it has less corruption..

Personally, I am fine with that.

No more of our public money eaten up by Italian and Swiss banks.

I would love to see the signature of Dr. Swami (As the potential-next Defence minister) next year on all these deals. :yahoo:
