How do you Chinese view the rapid development of the past 35 years?

Taiwan's and China's rapid industrialization
I was in Taiwan during the early to mid 1970s. Everybody was out in Taipei at night. There were fruit stands everywhere. I remember eating kumquats, lychees, persimmons, loquats, drinking fresh sugar cane drinks, etc.
When I next visited Taiwan in 1982-ish, there was no one outside. Everyone had moved inside with air conditioning.
To me, the sudden change was a shock. My memories and the new reality were very different.
In 1992, I was in China with my parents on business. Back then, Shenzhen was called the "Miracle City." To me, the most memorable part of the trip through Shenzhen was the miles and miles of Taiwanese large manufacturing buildings being built on Shenzhen's outskirts. Outside of the minivan, I saw endless tall cranes on top of tall buildings. I remember thinking to myself that this could be the nucleus of an economic superpower. I guessed it would take 20 to 30 years to build a super-size Taiwan on the mainland. I would say that my prediction has come true.
Nevertheless, to see the transformation of China over the years, it is still a shock. The scale of China's technological leap far exceeds Taiwan's. Taiwan was strictly civilian. China paired military technological advancement with unbelievable scale in civilian technology. For example, Huawei's $44 billion in sales last year almost matched Intel's $51 billion. Furthermore, Huawei's revenue is growing much faster than Intel's. Huawei could pass Intel in revenue in the next three to four years.
I am very optimistic about the future for Taiwan and China. Due to the West-Russia standoff and the slowdown in China's economy, commodity prices have fallen back to Earth. Taiwan's merchandise trade surplus of $60 billion this year and China's merchandise trade surplus of $720 billion per annum mean unprecedented prosperity for all Hans across the Taiwan Strait.
The future bodes well for the United States. Chinese consumers will buy more Apple products, GM and Ford cars, Boeing airplanes, Coca Colas, KFC meals, etc. than ever before.
The only losers are the Neo-cons. The warmongers will probably give up on containing China. China is not containable.
By the way, I feel privileged to have seen the United States at its strongest, Taiwan develop into a rich country, and the rise of China. Living through the most exciting time in history is unbelievable. The inflection point is happening now.

I've been constantly impressed by the economic development on the Mainland.
My jaw almost hit the ground when I saw the Shanghai skyline a few years back.
And I'm a Hong Konger, so I'm used to a fast pace of development and construction. But the Mainland cities are on a different level, the pace of modernization is unbelievable.
It makes me very confident of the future, when I can see the development happening with my own eyes.

Most of our families get benefits from past 30years China rapidly development ... my family
1. In 1980s my parents only 50 RMB salary/month, and that time they didn't have a house only rent a small apartment in unit. Until to 1997 they have their 1st house(78m2), Until to 2001 they bought Computer, Until to 2002 they bought cellphone.
2. Right now they living in a 120m2 house with well decorated, each can get 4,000~5,000 RMB salary/month even my Mom retired (In China Woman 55age, Man 60age retire). They have 3x houses and have the car ... although such situation still not called RICH in China, they had successfully built a middle-class family after 50age in China.
3. About me ? Until to 1997 my 1st time to use the Computer, until to 2002 owned 1st one by my scholarship ... now i used many computers, 3x Laptops for work and a MacPro for my girl. Until to 2003 i bought 1st cellphone(128color SonyEricsson) ... now i used many cellphones like SonyEricsson/Samsung/Apple/XiaoMi/HuaWei. In 2003 i left my parents go to university in other province, since that time i and my parents we living in different cities. Until to 2012 i bought my 1st big house(140m2) althought in hometown, right now im working hard for another one.
In the sense that the Chinese r strong, especially tough ... so past 30years, we can change our family living conditions and can make money here even we working 10x hours each day.

I believe my family it's the standard example for millions of Chinese family here especially Chinese middle-class ... just u see, they got awesome changed during 30years rapidly development (from undeveloped style ==> developed style living condition) ... it's like U.S after WWII / like Japan in 1980s. Family is the smallest unit of a country, when it get strong & rich the whole nation will be powerful !
As a skilled man (leio), as far as i saw & experiences in China i believe China will go further, to achieve great success ... now we r on the right way and also need to update this system step by step, let China much better.

In 1992, I was also in Shenzhen. First time I was in a communist country so I was very excited and observing everything. Was send by my company. Was part of a trip to Hong Kong and Taiwan. After a dinner in Shenzhen at the biggest restaurant I have ever been in, our host drove us in a van along a barely completed highway in pitch darkness. They were taking us to the industrial zone. We were up a small hill and I look back and saw lots of skyscrapers in the distance. so I comment... wow, you can see Hong Kong from here.
My host reply Back....that's not Hong Kong, that's Shenzhen!!!

I am from Shanghai, and needless to say about this city, the change over 35 years is too obvious.
About the future? I might say Shanghai (greater metropolitan Shanghai including Suzhou, Ningbo etc) have reached parity with or even overtaken some of the world's most advanced cities like HK, SG and Tokyo in hardware (infrastructure, transportation, financial centers, leisure facilities) and common indicators (Education, medical benefits, salary/income, GDP, advanced services, advanced manufacturing), and is catching up fast on the soft aspects like municipal management, law/order, culture/civilization. Shanghai is very optimistic in resuming the 1910-1930's glory of being the #1 metropolis in whole of Asia.

The one thing I admire most about us is we have all the capabilities in the world to do whatever we want. The only downside is time. Time is everything for us. The clock is ticking and it is just a matter of time before we join the rank of developed country.
