Sure, Japan can pretend it is still relevant. And everyone can pretend to believe it.

Japan is irrelevant. Here is why:

Japan just doesn't have the size to compete with China anymore.

Size is the primary determinant of global power. China has utilised its size to make Japan irrelevant. Being a rich country don't make you a powerful country. Qatar and Singapore are rich but not powerful as they lack the population size.

What China lacks in per capita, it makes up in absolute numbers. You determine global power by multiplying per capita with total population size. China has reached a point where its per capita is big enough to make it bigger than Japan in pretty much every area in absolute size.

Absolute power is the only power metric that is relevant in the world.

Only way for a smaller populated country to be WELL AHEAD of a larger populated country is by having a MASSIVE technological advantage. But the technological gap between Japan and China are closing at a significant rate. China is catching up quicker than Japan can move ahead.

When China reaches technological parity with Japan in the areas where Japan is ahead, then Japan will have no where to run but accept China as its master.

China has checkmated Japan!

congrats , overall a much bigger country manages to import more what a surprise
with your logic , India will soon make China look irrelevant

misc-genius-l.png

. . .
Import is just one of MANY areas China has surpassed Japan

again your country is much bigger than Japan , call me when you have the same living standards as Japan
and then you can talk about really surpassing them

.
You forgot that China's population is 10 times that of Japan. So divide China data by 10 and compare.

Size is all that matters in this world. Per capita is a useless measure that don't mean a damn thing in terms of power and influence.

China's sheer size has made Japan irrelevant once again, just like it was throughout 95% of its history.

Japan's 15 seconds of fame are........OVER!

You are right, we are big, we are f*****g MASSIVE, thats advantage for China. We are using our size to make Japan an irrelevant little ant. Size is the determinant of absolute power. Per capita means nothing in this world.

Qatar is way richer than China per capita, but Qatar is an absolute nobody in the world

You need size to be relevant and the bottom line is China has made Japan irrelevant.

Japan is not irrelevant. It is a technology powerhouse. Just because China exports cheap goods does not make it a super power.

Japan was technologically relevant in the 1980's.

On every major global power metric China has surpassed Japan.
It's not even a comparison anymore.

Yup, Japan is very much irrelevant.

Yes bro China is bigger than Japan in many macroscopic and overall indicators, and hence influence, I second to that fact. Note that China is a continental-sized economy, while Japan geographically and population-wise is about size of a Chinese province.

However I wouldn't undermine Japan for them being a top-notched advanced country, if not the most advanced of all, is a respectable role model of for China which is still developing. Relax bro, despite China is still behind Japan in many advancement indicators, let's thrive to reach par with Japan in the future, like what SK and Taiwan have done!

China has also catch up with Japan in technology for example HSR. Our operation speed is fastest in the world with innovation and technology ensure our price to quality ratio remains the best in the world.

Japan failed to cope up with globalization. Once upon the time Japanese companies were on top but now they are nowhere, Only way for Japan is to globalize in big way and source whatever is available cheaply. Unless you source factors of production from most appropriate source, you can not be a winner. Come and invest in India, It is the best location to begine with. Here everything is available. Land to manpower of varied skills to capital to research. Japan can not afford to wait and watch.

India is too far away from Japan.
