Lack of strategic depth has always been a concern. Countries of this size do not even survive long, let alone thrive, when faced with much bigger neighbours.

But your idea may not work for many reasons.

1. UNCLOS 1982 stipulates that 'transit passage' is permitted through such straits as the Singapore Straits.

Surface combatants that close to Singapore's waters would be best described as floating targets. Beyond what is available in Singapore, resources from elsewhere can be mobilized too.

Singapore's largest military base abroad AFAIK is in Australia and it's set to expand.


3. Singapore is an important global centre for trade, transport, forex market, oil refining centre, semiconductor wafer producer, aerospace and supplier of various other high tech goods' parts and components which go into making complete systems.

Harming Singapore is equivalent to disrupting the global supply chain for a wide variety of critical components. It's very, very unlikely any country can get away with destroying Singapore even if they are militarily capable of doing that. That's true, I meant it's similar in the sense that they are both small island territories with a larger landmass to the north.

Singapore and China has a strong fundamental relationship build up over the decades. Let's not judge the whole relationship just because of different views on certain issues. It's only normal.

Two of the big issues are the Singaporean defence relationship with the USA and also their connection to the ROC.

I don't think Singapore can be blamed on the SCS issue since they are a small island and they live or die by the rule-based international order. But why not switch the overseas training locations from the ROC to Hainan island instead, I think the offer has been made before.

No major country in the world has diplomatic recognition of the ROC anyway, so it's not a big loss for Singapore.

The Taiwanese media claims that SG is grateful to TW and we don't want to seem too 'mercenary' in principle. After all only Taiwan (and Israel) helped us in our most desperate times.

But I think it's probably due to technology sensitivities and risk of spying. Our technologies after all mostly come from the West, and we don't want to be drag into this potential dispute about the leaking of military technologies.

Next, buy the FC-1/JF-17. Get a supersonic aircraft with anti-ship capability so you don't have to use the Fokker 50 anymore.
