Hong Kong police anger has reached boiling point after force is cast as public enemy in extradition bill fiasco while protesters break law at will, insiders say

An insider said officers had never been so angry, and it was not down to the frequent verbal assaults they endured, but because society glorified the radical protesters and put all the blame on the force.

A sergeant lost part of a finger while a constable was kicked off an escalator and brutally assaulted by youths as he fell to the ground. Two officers were initially in a critical condition after they were hit by hard objects, believed to be bricks, in the head and stomach respectively.

“It seems everything the protesters do can be justified and forgiven, even when they attack us with rods and bite off one of our fingers. But whatever we do is wrong,” said the source, who attended Monday’s meeting.

“Many Hongkongers have lost their rationality. We, as law enforcers, uphold the rule of law but now we cannot even exercise the power given to us by the law.

“What else can we do?”

Another senior officer, speaking about their frustrations, said it appeared the force had become the public enemy during the ongoing political fiasco over the now-suspended bill, adding that he dared not tell people: “I am a police officer.”

He was saddened and frustrated with the force’s tolerant approach to violent protesters during clashes at recent rallies.

“They broke the law in front of us, but we were asked to let the lawbreakers go. Protesters will think we are useless,” he said. “They will become brazen and use more violent action next time.”

“When a few of us are surrounded and assaulted by 30 to 40 protesters with metal rods, umbrellas and bricks, better protective gear may just help us buy five more seconds from injury. Don’t forget, the protesters grabbed our helmets. They really want to kill us,” one detective said.

The second detective, whose legs were bruised in clashes, said protesters threw full plastic bottles from a height at his head and beat him up in the mall as he was helping people to leave. A cola bottle burst open on his helmet, he said.

“I was like a dartboard. Protesters kept throwing objects at me,” he said. “It was like the movie Train to Busan. Protesters are like zombies. Any officers acting alone will certainly die in such violent clashes as protesters outnumber us and we are trapped.”

China needs to make a decision. This circus can't continue it makes China look extremely weak. There are two solutions. 1) Reverse the bill completely 2) Use the law and bring down the hammer on these protestors. Hong Kong needs stability. Whatever the outcome China has played this game poorly.

I have different view on this riots.
1, China mainland was not affected at all, no sympathy from 99% Chinese in mainland. There is no political crisis, China mainland is very stable right now.
2, There is consensus in mainland China that those riots broke the law if it happened in any countries. The west stand on the wrong side. The more the west encourage those riots, the more reasonable the Chinese government stands.
3, Pop a pimple that is ready. HK has to go through series of chaos to release discontent. After that HK can do some political reform to address the real issues I think.
4, The riots are backed and funded by foreign countries, no doubt about it. But those organizers are not rational, they will divide into factions, and dissent I think.
5, Let the situation go worse, otherwise HK citizens won't realize how bad those riots are.
6, It's people's war. When majority HK citizens stand against those riots, their political agenda will come to an end.

Take it easy. We just sit and look how the southern Chinese monkeys perform freedom or liberalism. Hong Kong now is like a zoo or circus troup for us.

Extradite the protestors to their colony master, the United Kingdom.

These "British oversea citizens" should be granted the right to stay in UK as any British citizens, there shall be no racial discrimination against these people in UK, and they shall have full right as any British citizens.

I think for now HK should be left alone, however it should not be left to decay like that indefinitly because its part of China, leaving part of your country to be infiltrated by foreign agents just because its too small of a city is not a wise thing to do, so I believe that China should wait till reunification with Taiwan is achieved and only after that abolish the one country two systems between HK & the mainland, Taiwan would be presented with two options: surrender and have some autonomy under the one country two systems or fight back and in this case Taiwan would get no autonomy.

One country two systems is a bold idea by Deng Xiaoping. We watched how so call "western democracy" works in HK and Taiwan, very disappointing. We gave HK and Taiwan opportunities to prove a better system, they failed to do so.

The west failed to demonstrate the superiority of "western democracy", there won't be one country two systems any more. Taiwan will go through political reform, it will take many years, but eventually it will be similar to mainland China.

China mainland was not affected I agree. However, remember we spoke before about the soft image of China. You can't build such an image if the Chinese Govt is being undermined by its own citizens and the situation remains in limbo. Remember I have friends from both sides of the coin. The other side is feeling optimistic a chance to start a movement which goes beyond this issue indoctrinating the next generation. My friend who is a police officer feels disheartened. They have been discouraged from using full force by there superiors. While these protestors are using all sorts of weapons. He feels the whole of Hong Kong is against the police force. It's one police officer against 40 rioters. Headgear can only give you a certain amount of protection, but it means nothing if the rioters take it from you.

There might be consensus in China that those rioters broke the law. However, even in France when the yellow vest movement was on the street causing mischief the police were called to stop them. You can read the news, the French police didn't use kid gloves. Law enforcement is the bedrock of any society as they maintain order. The Hong Kong police force is fighting this battle with its hands tied behind its back. It's the Govt's duty to protect its citizens. Law-abiding citizens have been harassed, their phones have been searched by these protestors, and many of them have been beaten up. Hence why I said the Chinese Govt needs to make a decision. 1) Revoke the bill and let the situation calm down. This will have long term negative consequences in my opinion. 2) Use the law and bring down the hammer on these protestors.

Take it easy. We just sit and look how the southern Chinese monkeys perform freedom or liberalism. Hong Kong now is like a zoo or circus troup for us.

Read the above post brother.

the foreign backers of these protesters are constantly provoking the authorities to be harsh so that Tianman square like situation arises to use against China

I agree...

But the Pakistan-style policy of wait and watch can also be disastrous because it erodes many intangible yet important things in a society: rule of law, writ of the State, sovereignty, etc. So it's a delicate balance.

My belief is that such things need to be nipped in the bud so aggressively, ferociously and (ideally) covertly that they never reach the desired (by foreign intel) scale.

Even the gov't "reverse the bill completely", they will still find another excuse to riot on the streest. If they are truely protesting for the bill and rational, they should already know the bill is dead.

The UK will do it; but before the UK, the shameful German government has already provided refugee protection to these 2 scumbags the day after they jumped bails. R Wong and A Li were arrested and have to face serious charges in connection with the riot in Mongkok several years ago during the heat of the so called "umbrella movement". Some other rioters/criminal trouble makers have fled to some other undisclosed places, and Taiwan is a "heaven" for these scums.

I agree Carrie Lam has already hinted the bill is dead. But the strategy of the Govt has emboldened these protestors. This was the worst-case scenario for China. Why? Because a new generation of people mostly the youth have become indoctrinated. They regard China as the enemy and by extension the police. My friend who hates the CPC has never been happier. In his own words "This is a turning point for Hong Kong's democracy movement." Look at Chinese history, in particular, the last 70 years of the Qing dynasty. Protest movements which turn into violence may seem irrelevant at times but it can lead to disastrous consequences where society is polarised. I can imagine the next upcoming years will see a great divide in Hong Kong. People who hate the CPC Govt won't use dialogue against the opposition but they will stigmatize them. I saw these events happen at a smaller scale during my days in University, what's to stop this happening at a wider scale. Bring the law into the streets and hammer it into these protestors. No one is above the law, bring confidence to the people that there property and lives are protected. I like Hong Kong, it makes me sad watching the city turn into a circus.

@Rasengan :

I agree to most of what you've said, Bro!

The strategy of the oppositions is to create conflicts, the bigger the better, the bloodier the merrier for them.
All the chapters of commotions, riots and violent confrontations are organised, well-funded and will continue for a long tme to come until the evil organisers / sponsers are seeing a full-blown repeat of the old-tune: the HK version of "June 4th" or"colour revolution"!

China is now very restrained, allowing the local police force to exercise their duties. Even so the foreign or foreign-influenced local media have already been spilling venoms on their channels saying "excessive' forces were used by the well-disciplined HK police force. What a freaking joke if you compare the conducs of the HK police to those happening in Europe or in particular the rogue state where they rioting scumbags are lying in their coffins now.
