Last time this happened was in the late 1970's, Deng xiaoping kicked out all of his political rivals in the government and posted his allies in every position. He couldn't have embarked that fundamental government restructuring and reforms without that absolute control and support. But that killed the inherent check and balance within the communist party.

Deng handpicked Hu yaobang and Zhao ziyang to implement his policies but both strayed from his policies and became his opponents, so today Xi handpicked his team but it doesn't guarantee they won't turn against him in the future.

Deng gave up "official titles" for almost a decade before his death. Is that correct ?
