New Delhi:Hindustan Construction Co (HCC) on Wednesday announced that its JV with MAX Group has won a Rs737 crore contract from Russia for a nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.

The contract includes civil works of Turbine Island for Unit 1 of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). “HCC, in a joint venture with MAX Group, a construction company in Bangladesh has been awarded $110 million (Rs737 crore) contract by Russia’s State Nuclear Company, JSC Atomstroyexport,” HCC said in a statement.

HCC’s share in the JV is 40% ($44 million/Rs295 crore), the statement said. The Rooppur NPP will be built with Russian technology and is equipped with two VVER reactors of 1,200 MW each.

These reactors are similar to the Kudankulam NPP in Tamil Nadu. “HCC has become the first Indian company to participate in the international civil nuclear market. We look forward to further project awards in Rooppur NPP and expanding our infrastructure footprint in Bangladesh,”Arjun Dhawan, director and group CEO, HCC said in a statement.

Recently, India signed an agreement with Bangladesh for civil nuclear cooperation, under which India has extended expertise and project support for Bangladesh’s first NPP.

India not being a member of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) cannot participate directly in the construction of atomic power reactors. But Indian companies can be involved in construction and installation works and in the supply of equipment of non-critical category.

No, you are wrong. Do you really think any of our construction companies alone is that much capable to do the work? Our Max Group holds the majority stake in this joint venture project with Hindustan Construction. Max Group needed partnership with a company that has previous experience in the nuclear power station construction, and HCC has it. Max Group will learn from its JV partner while working together and will use this experience in a future similar construction inside or outside of Bangladesh.

This says it all....

By the way MAX Group along with Abdul Monem should have done it and if needed we should have sought Chinese help - but I guess Indian lobbied Hasina hard so she had to throw these people a bone as she does once in a while.

It seems like those "once in a whiles" happens far too often or you are just in denial.

. . .
This literal ToT for nuclear power plants
What ToT you are talking here? HCC is just a civil construction company. Please give me the microscope to see the ToT of nuclear power you are jabbing at.

India had been using Russian nuclear technology for a while and we can learn few bits from them for far cheaper price.

Well not about ToT for any nuclear reactor per se, But HCC has good experience in EPC ( Engineering, Procurement and Construction) of many nuclear reactors in India and other big ticket infrastructure projects. So in that sense, Bangladeshi companies can learn alot from them and this JV can be good for that purpose.

Sadly we will see glowing Bangladeshis walking around soon. India has trouble building toilets, tejas, subs and now BD nuclear plant will fail

In time the deliberate cracks in the plant will be discovered by the naive people of our country and of course we will have to pay the price once more for trusting our 'all weather ally'.

I believe HCC is an EPC company and they have insurance for any faulty design issued or constructed by them. If they do a faulty design deliberately they will have to pay the price eventually.
