India’s defeat in the 1962 war against China continues to reverberate in the country—particularly for Hindu nationalists.

A report in India’s Economic Times notes that the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) wants Indian schoolchildren to closely study and learn more about the 1962 war between India and China. India, led by Jawaharlal Nehru and the Indian National Congress at the time, lost the war. Even today, India’s defeat in 1962 continues to persist as a source of embarrassment, informing Indian strategic thinking toward China. The RSS is closely ideologically aligned with many members of India’s current ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government—Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his political career in part with a boon from his role as a pracharak (campaigner) for the RSS.

The RSS’ reasons for supporting broader education on the war are varied. According to one RSS official who spoke to the Economic Times, the primary motivation behind is to “acknowledge it and learn the lessons from it and move on.” Additionally, the group is looking to highlight the accomplishments of the Indian military during the war, attributing India’s ultimate defeat to the policies pursued by the Congress government of the time: ”We can tell the children about one of the most embarrassing episodes of our history by highlighting the gallantry of our troops. The war could be used to instil pride and also serve as a crucial lesson in diplomacy.”

The RSS’ ideology is fundamentally rooted in Hindu nationalism, and the thought of prominent Indian political thinkers like Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Madhav Golwalkar. These thinkers—particularly Savarkar—emphasized India’s martial prowess and unity as the cornerstone of a strong, independent country. For the RSS and Hindu nationalists, the 1962 war has long been seen as a product of the failure of government policy. The long-classified Henderson Brooks-Bhagat report on the causes of India’s defeat in the war leaked last year, confirming this to an extent. India’s previous defense minister, A.K. Antony, had told the Indian parliament that the report could not be declassified because its contents were ”not only extremely sensitive but are of current operational value.”

“History is a subject that should invoke a sense of pride in India and also a study of events that we should take lessons from. The Chinese aggression is one such episode and is likely to be included in history books,” another RSS member noted. The RSS’ push for broader education on the 1962 war is a sign that India’s Hindu nationalists won’t be eager to forget the country’s defeat in 1962. However pragmatic Modi’s recent overtures toward China have been on the border disputes between the two countries, India continues to reflect on the causes of its defeat in 1962.

Whats wrong ?

The nation must not forget the mistakes made for as we see in our neighbourhood nations make the same mistake again & again .

Everyone talks of victories, there is more to learn in defeats.

. . . .
I think they are learning from us!

In China, history lessons always put BIG emphasis on “century of humiliation”,to make sure our children never forget. yet our “glorious past” was merely passed along as historical timelines/events to students to deal with exams, but in fact,Chinese civilization is the single most continuous and expansive in the world, witch all chinese should take deep pride in,but oddly, our history textbooks never advocate that.

I've seen many countries preach their history of glory, some distort the facts and even fabricate...I just dont understand the logic behind it...imo countries drunk on their past also have no future

A comment from the Diplomat Magazine have an interesting Theory on what the RSS wants with the 1962 defeat.

I'm reminded of the sentiment among some folks here that "The South will rise again." This isn't about learning from mistakes. It's about recasting the past to suit your agenda today. In this case, the RSS wants to accomplish two things: further discredit the Congress party and get Indians riled up against China. The first chips away at Congress' already waning base by highlighting their past mistakes, the second solidifies the nationalist position by instilling hatred and resentment against The Foreigner.

In this respect, the RSS is taking the German nationalist approach after World War I. By playing up the heroism of the soldiers and decrying the leadership that caused them to lose, the ultimate result will be an attempt at payback. There is only so long people will be told their previous leaders cost them an embarrassing defeat before they demand their current leaders even things up. The implied logic of this lesson will be that India could have won and should have won, but that cowardly, inept, and/or conniving politicians and bureaucrats stabbed the brave Indian soldier in the back - so with those villains out of the way, India should go ahead and win the next time.

This is a recipe for disaster because India is even less capable today vis a vis the PLA than it was back in 1962. Back then China was isolated, poor, industrially backwards, and militarily limited. It was largely a light infantry force with little in the way of armor, heavy artillery, or aircraft. I'm not saying India was any better off, but the fact remains that at worst India and China were evenly matched.

Today China has a much larger economy, is much more developed, and most importantly has a much better developed infrastructure on its side of the border than India has. India's vaunted "mountain strike corps" has been reduced in size - in half, in fact - due to budget constraints and India's air force is shrinking at a time when China's is increasing in both size and technological sophistication. China also has a much more robust artillery force while India has a problem keeping its guns up to date and supplied with shells.

Looking for trouble is not something India needs to do right now. Its economy is growing and Modi seems focused on streamlining the bureaucracy and building India up. Fostering this sort of historical resentment only focuses on the past at a time when Modi and people like him are looking forward to the future.

1962,,,Where was the first battle?
Not in the disputed territory , not inside the territory of India, but in China territory, In the north of the McMahon line, India recognized China territory .that is to say, indians war with China in Chinese territory, how can it be said that was Chinese invasion?
The Indian government put the lie to continue?

The Indian government should tell people the truth, stop false propaganda

Even better. Just make sure to teach them that Nehru started the war, not us. We don't need any more resentment from neighbors
