Hundreds of Hindu nationalist protesters marched in the Indian state of Gujarat on Saturday, prompting the closure of stores owned by several multinational companies caught up in a furore over social media posts supporting disputed Kashmir.​

The messages were last week by the Pakistani branches of firms including Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, fast food chain Domino's Pizza and Yum Brand Inc's Pizza Hut and KFC, which also operate in India.

They were issued by the companies on Feb 5 to coincide with Pakistan's Kashmir Solidarity Day, held annually to commemorate the sacrifices of Kashmiris struggling for self-determination, and caused anger among social media users in India.

"These companies cannot be doing business in India and at the same time supporting Pakistan's stand on Kashmir," Dinesh Navadiya, national treasurer of Hindu nationalist organisation Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), told Reuters during a protest in the city of Surat.

Shouting slogans such as "Kashmir is Ours" and wearing saffron scarves, more than 100 members of Bajrang Dal, another Hindu nationalist group, also joined the protest - one of several held in Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Both the VHP and Bajrang Dal are linked to Modi's ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

The furore has highlighted the risks faced by companies operating in India and arch rival Pakistan, which control parts of Kashmir but both claim the Himalayan territory in full.

India says Pakistan supports an armed insurrection against New Delhi's rule in India-controlled Kashmir that broke out in 1990. Pakistan denies the charge and says it only provides diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people.

"We protested peacefully against these companies for the tweets by their Pakistani affiliates in support of Kashmir," said Hitendrasinh Rajput, spokesperson for the VHP's state unit in Gujarat's largest city of Ahmedabad.

"We want to make it clear to these companies and others that Kashmir is an inseparable part of India," Rajput said.

Companies including Hyundai, Kia, Domino's Pizza, Yum Brand's Pizza Hut and KFC, Japan's Suzuki Motor, Honda Motor and Isuzu Motor issued apologies as criticism grew over the posts.

This is why I am now in the middle of a discussion with some of my friends opposing the entire Bhagwati-ManMohan Singh reconciliation of the infamous brain drain on the grounds that the drained brains did some good to India once rich and prosperous outside. My point to them, and a point needing to be made with delicacy and subtlety, as they themselves are exemplars, is that the non-resident Indian has done nothing for India, except to serve as reservoirs of bigotry that they carried with them, and brought into the open when the earlier social sanctions against these kinds of expressions of bigotry were in full force in India.

We only got trash like that millionaire who wants you to donate your fortune to a trust fund to be created by him and his associates, who would then wait for your death, search for and locate your new life-form, and donate the money, with interest, to that new life. In some circles, this is known as the 22 Tequila Theory.

A lot of it has to do with the “separation of desi and desh” that this category of NRIs(and Pk and bd folks) switch to when abroad. They do their best(and are successful in many cases) to integrate with white people(never colored ones) and inter marry as well which leads to the impression that they have “progressed” beyond their ignorance and bigotry. However, the reality is that they have merely put on this façade for social and professional acceptance but are the same or even more regressive and make efforts guarding those values.

That being said, the second and third generation is generally not Indian(or whatever desi flavor) anymore and are not to be supportive of Modi’s India or at least Are agnostic to it. But, the whole H1b category (regardless of whether they hold foreign passports today) are as bigoted or more as the day they got on that plane out of India.

The caste issue is quite ridiculous especially when you see desis in general put hashtags of Black Lives Matter while vociferously focusing on skin tone and “family background” that is more about caste than good families.

It is rather ironic(as if that word hasn’t been used enough) that such “Zia-fication” of India is the wet dream of every Zaid Hamid type in Pakistan. After all, the idea of India has a major pillar of secularism and was the reason many muslims stayed along with other minorities. However, in my limited view it bodes back to the 30s Congress makeup(one of my grandmothers sisters alluded to another term for RSS which they used) and the religious fanaticism that ebbed there. Gandhi, Nehru and others did see this and spent their latter existence doing whatever they could to counter it but the seeds had been laid then and have finally sprouted.

One could say this has emerged before and I leave it for your better experience to correct me but I feel it was usually an election ploy than actual beliefs. I cannot fault the BJP government of the 90s because at the end they were gentlemen compared to what runs the show today. Oddly, now the establishment in Pakistan is trying to erase Zia’s legacy both within and outside but chemotherapy isn’t easy nor always successful as you are experiencing first hand.

The younger generation may be agnostic to this but those are of the elite or middle/upper middle category. Your ruppee 50000/yr or less salaried regardless of background are going to buy this tripe because they are seeing the same echo chamber.. so will those who profited from this government enough and are ok ignoring the stakes. At the end, and sadly I see it getting much much worse just as it did in the US and other places. Eventually polarization will be the norm for most of the world until another conflict sets precedence for another right and wrong.
