Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used an international conference on religious freedom Wednesday as a platform to suggest that Islamic governments which suppress Christianity are secretly afraid Islam will lose out in a public debate.

“Every one of us who is a religious person knows there are some who may not support or approve of our religion, but is our religion so weak that statements of disapproval cause us to lose our faith?” she asked the attendees, who included national representatives from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation.

“Especially when one person’s speech seems to challenge another person’s religion’s belief, or maybe even offends that person’s religious beliefs … we defend our beliefs best by defending free speech for everyone,” she said, while citing her own experience as a Methodist — a Christian movement made up of many Protestant denominations, and where debate is common.

...

Among the attendees were representatives of Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Clinton did not mention any country by name, nor did she specifically mention Islam.

Representatives of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia would not be happy to hear this.

Please don't bring Pakistan into this thread, Clinton did not mention any country by name.

It's funny that a few days ago, she was talking about LGBT rights that Christians in this country so ferociously (& violently) oppose, & now she is standing up for Christianity.

if we talk about our religion we are labeled as extremist fanatics,,,,

No you are labelled extremists when you kill and persecute in the name of you religion. Ever heard of Blasphemy and Anti-Ahmadi laws in Pakistan? That's not talking about your religion but oppressing others. There is a big defence between the two. This also demonstrates the mentality of the people in general. In Saudi Arabia there is no freedom. In Egypt they are burning Coptic churches. Even in so called moderate and developed Malaysia 10 churches were burnt over a row over word "Allah". You guys are fanatics to put it mildly. You don’t know what religious debate or religious freedom is.

Debate; don’t kill, oppress or persecute.

Zakir Naik also criticises Hinduism and converts Hindus openly in India. So far he has not been killed neither arrested in India. This is called religious freedom. You can criticise the religion of the dominant majority and convert them too and yet no repercussion for it. This only proves India provides religious freedom, not that any Muslim country provides freedom to Christians.

I'm more worried about radical Christian militias. those guys can get pretty violent.

More violent than Chinese killing numerous Tibetan or is that a different type of violence? Aren’t there laws in China that can amply handle that? Seems to me as scaremongering, an excuse to oppress genuine religious freedom.

Just out of interest why is China not famous for its human rights?

violance against any person from any religion should be condemned..and those who support such acts does not represent the entire Muslims.....

Please don't make me quote all the instances of religious intolerance in India, the PDF doesn't have enough bandwidth to support that. And don't bring Pakistan into the discussion here.

Why are "entire Muslims" not trying to stop the violence if they are not silent supporters of such travesties?

.
actually, i agree with her statement......

why single out "Islamic governments" though? Look at secular European governments who still have reps within them who advocate or espouse feelings of intolerance?

How does this have any impact on the freedom that Zakir Naik has?

However you do know Gujrat riots were started by Muslim do you? Just like Gojra riots were started by Muslims. Too bad Christians in Pakistan could not hit back as well as Hindus in India so Muslims in Gujrat are no crying fowl.

Please do, along side all the instances in Pakistan and let’s see which list is bigger. Let’s start with Indian equivalent of Blasphemy and Anti-Ahmadi laws. Let’s see how Indian constitution and law officially treats its citizens of various faiths.
