HIGH SUICIDE RATES AMONG UNITED STATES SERVICE MEMBERS AND VETERANS OF THE POST-9/11 WARS
9-11_combat-suicides620x300.png

Suicide rates among active military personnel and veterans of the post-9/11 wars are reaching new peaks. This report uses governmental data, secondary literature, and interviews to document a suicide epidemic that is emerging among post-9/11 fighters as part of a broader mental health crisis.

The study finds that at least four times as many active duty personnel and war veterans of post-9/11 conflicts have died of suicide than in combat, as an estimated 30,177 have died by suicide as compared with the 7,057 killed in post-9/11 war operations. The report notes that the increasing rates of suicide for both veterans and active duty personnel are outpacing those of the general population - an alarming shift, as suicide rates among service members have historically been lower than suicide rates among the general population.

The report finds that these high suicide rates are caused by multiple factors, including risks inherent to fighting in any war such as high exposure to trauma, stress, military culture and training, continued access to guns, and the difficulty of reintegrating into civilian life. But the study finds that there are factors unique to the post-9/11 era, including a huge increase in exposure to improvised explosive devices (IEDs), an attendant rise in traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and modern medical advances that have allowed service members to survive these and other physical traumas and return to the frontlines in multiple deployments. The combination of multiple traumatic exposures, chronic pain, and lasting physical wounds is linked to suicidal behaviors.
Additionally, the sheer length of the war has kept service members in the fight longer, providing more opportunities for traumatic exposure, and fueling a growing disapproval and ignorance among the public that has only enhanced veterans' difficulty finding belonging and self-worth as they reintegrate in society.

In total, there were 89,100 confirmed U.S. veteran suicides between 2005 and 2018, including veterans of the Global War on Terror and also previous wars such as the Vietnam War.17 The VA began tracking suicide rates among veterans in the mid-2000s and has not released current rates or numbers beyond 2018 despite publishing annual reports since 2005. Estimating an average of 6,364 veteran suicide deaths per year, the total number between 2005 and the present day is likely closer to 95,460.

And yet ...

Many studies have attempted to understand the causes of suicide in the military. Nevertheless, “the precise cause of the increase in military suicides remains unknown.”

The reported rates may severely underreport the number of actual active duty suicides. A recent examination of reported suicide rates of active duty Army personnel also found “the Department of Defense Suicide Event Report details only approximately half of those who die by suicide.”

Sometimes I wonder if these were actually "suicides" not KIA. America, like many of its touts, have denial mode syndrome. One of its tout want its soldiers to "Succumb to injuries" rather being killed on the spot.

You supported and armed Saddam against Iran to begin with ... I swear you Americans are the biggest lying scum on earth, after your masters Zionists Israelis.

While we certainly favored anybody other than Iran I don't remember Saddam having US tanks or jets...do you? :coffee:

Somebody else was the one really arming him...of course you'll ignore that part...because that country is untouchable.

The ironic thing here is the Iran defended itself in part using US weapons.

After US removed Iraq from Terror List of that time it allowed them to purchase dual use equipment.
US supplied many weapons a full list was released back in 2003 including Bell Textron Agusta ASW and other platforms.

With Sources:
US Military Assistance to Saddam (globalpolicy.org)

Don't forget the chemicals and U.S. moving Israeli stock pile of Soviet parts to make sure Iraqi war machine kept running.

Then you have the history of former CIA Contractor Sarkis Soghanalian who was charged after it leaked out he was responsible for supplying military hardware including TOW Anti-Tank Missile's.

Also, US Navy was quietly engaging the Iranian Navy during night operations and lurking patrol boards away from territorial waters and taking them out.

So this, ma empire, didn't supply bull shit doesn't fly.

The ironic thing here is the Iran defended itself in part using US weapons.

Big difference between being supplied during active conflict versus using what you already have.

Agusta. That's Italian. Isn't PDF the place perpetually complaining about the US and UK derailing foreign sales by other countries due to parts?

Bell Textron is American the U.S. Government approved the deal the Italian PM during an interview admitted it in 1993. The link I posted states it as well.

"In 1984, Italy's state-owned Agusta helicopter manufacturer sold $164 milion worth of helicopters to Iraq. The order was for military helicopters fitted out for anti-submarine warfare, but Rome had needed permission from Washington because the choppers were sold by Agusta Bell, which made them under license from Bell Textron in the United States. [Italian PM Guilio] Andreotti, when asked in 1993 about the sale of Agusta helicopters to Iraq, sat stiffly at his desk in Rome and confirmed with a terse 'si' that they had indeed been sold as part of a top-level understanding between President Reagan and Prime Minister Crazi to try to assist Saddam. 'Certainly the policy were all following at the time was a policy of great support for Iraq,' said Andreotti" (Spider's Web: The secret history of how the White House illegally armed Iraq by Alan Friedman, p. 85)

The same way F-16s come for Pakistan regardless of Indian protests. The USA will seek to maintain the “balance” it wants in the equation for national interests
