Thanks, yes I would be interested in reading it. What needs to be understood is that those with well established share in the national economy stand to gain if the national economy grows, or the nation is more productive and competitive. When the pie grows, old money with prior investments benefits. It also takes the burden off of them to manage the country and they can better focus on managing their money, investing in the most productive parts of the economy.

Absolutely. Cognitive prowess / intellectual capability is not valued in our society. Our civ service, intel and military exams don't primarily test aptitude --- they are mostly rote memorization / 'general knowledge' tests with no real relevance to the job at hand. This is very different from how the world's leading intel agencies test. This isn't rocket science.

The trouble with an exploitative elite is that they are often happy with the status quo. This is the entire paradox. The establishment and the capitalist elite both will benefit hugely from better talent in government, better grand strategy, etc., but their standards have become so low that they are satisfied with mediocrity. This is why Pakistan hardly has any beautiful office spaces or stunning public architecture created under the patronage of the few billionaires that we do have. The entire psyche is different. No need to attack Iran, Pakistan need to set it priority straight for it’s strategic interest and draw lines so that Iranian can understand and respect those limits. If push comes to shove, Iranians will drop these Pakistani, Afghani Shia in a heart beat. I am writing my thesis on the stunted consciousness of post colonial power elites in Pakistan at Harvard right now. They literally cannot access the higher consciousness required to realize that the present status quo cannot work. But the status quo bias (an actual cognitive problem) is so strong --- both for transgenerational reasons related to a colonized mind and because of poorly aligned incentives --- that they have lowered standards and definitions of excellence and success rather than rising to the challenge.

This is the sign of an intellectually and morally bankrupt nation. We need drastic, radical change soon. The amount of people who think incremental improvements will save the day or, worse, that the present 'new normal' is the best we can do are part of what I call the "mediocrity trap." They are responsible for the country's destruction.

A former COAS (very well respected) who I interviewed as part of my research described it perfectly: qualitative deterioration. The example he gave was simple yet profound: heaps of trash in various corners of Lahore Cantt. The Corps Commander, two GOCs, and many Brigs and lower all work and roam around there all day, yet it doesn't bother anyone enough to clean things up. The second example was the motorcyclists-must-wear-helmets rule. It is generally enforced, and there are checkposts at all Cantt entry points to ensure compliance, but every day you see at least a few motorcyclists without helmets. This should be unthinkable --- because rules are rules, and if you can't enforce excellence in a small, highly controlled area like Lahore Cantt, what hope do you have of overcoming highly complex challenges that require daring and cleverness in equal measure?

Our basics aren't even aligned. It's a new 'elite' (not an intellectual elite with higher consciousness, but an 'establishment elite') that has simply replaced the British colonizing elite. The same exploitation continues.

As Noam Chomsky says about the US: it is one of the most free but also one of the most indoctrinated nations in the world. That means that everybody is "allowed" to publish such a thesis, but would find it incredibly hard to find an advisor willing to supervise it. So, these subtle mechanisms result in thought control and what he calls 'miseducation.' Essentially, these universities want to produce 'excellent sheep' who are what Nassem Taleb (of black swan fame) calls "intellectual-yet-idiots." They can't access a higher consciousness and see the world for what it is. They buy into the poster themes and superficial crap that they've been fed, and come out as conformist robots despite being highly intelligent individuals.

Long story short: if you can back up your claims intellectually, some departments are more sympathetic to such theses. There is nothing stopping anyone from going forward with this --- the tragedy is that 100% (note that I did not say 99.99%) of Pakistanis doing social science dissertations at top US/UK universities are ALL towing the narratives that they're being fed. Imagine how intellectually enslaved a nation has to be for its top minds (the undergraduate kids at Harvard from Pakistan, who are the best of the best academically from across Pakistan's best schools) called Hussain Haqqani as one of the main speakers for an event on Pakistan's challenges and future. A man who even most goraz privately acknowledge is a sellout and snake! Ye haal hai.

But it shouldn't be surprising. There is no compelling, competing narrative. There is no urgency felt by those in power to get a new 'intellectual elite' with a higher consciousness (by this I mean the ability to look beyond post colonial tropes and Western indoctrination) into government. There is no human capital strategy. Religion itself has been left to a market-based laissez-faire system where the more well-funded and virulent strains seem to take over (as they more acutely embody the resentments of the masses).

Our constitution sucks. This form of representative democracy can't deliver anything except to keep us plodding along while the elites come and go --- judge, general, bureaucrat, politician --- with their major achievement being keeping Pakistan barely alive. And, believe me, they pat themselves on the back (genuinely) for this, thinking it's some kind of HUGE milestone. Pathetic. Great nations rise to complex challenges. Pathetic nations make excuses and lower their standards. We can still choose.

This is nice and all, but what is actively being done to fix this?

It's near impossible, you need honest, patriotic, and strong-willed people in power to have a chance at making such drastic changes to the current structure. It requires a collective effort from the elite.
