I am the newbie here ...find the forums very interesting to read especially the ones about history geography economics and sciences....may be I should have been more attentive in school!

anyway here I am

@Armstrong - thanks buddy, herr.generalismo! How do I get a title like that? I want to be general too!

BTW may I ask a prickly question about the 'Iqbal - Stray Reflections' quote you have? Why is freedom in defiance of the Universe? If one is protesting the wrongs in the outlook of a society, it is those outlooks that are defying the Universe. May be I don't get the context from this limited quote

Stick around...post around and you'll get it ! :)

I'm sorry I don't quite follow. :what:

However the quote is about Iqbal's outlook on Islam (as I understood it to be). What hes trying to say is that for him Islamic philosophical thought is something that aims to transcends the narrow parochialism of 'this' ism vs 'that' ism, limited nationalism, is an outlook on life and about life devoid of metaphysical pursuits and of monasticism but at the same time is dedicated to the vigorous pursuit of truth ! And in his opinion Islamic philosophical thought was different in the sense that it was in defiance to established norms and practices both in the West and in the East and the thought process that comes with it; for it neither confirmed to the excessive materialistic turn that Western philosophy had taken nor was it overly ascetic in its perspective as Eastern philosophy.

Thats his opinion, as I understood it to be.

I understand that is his opinion....but we always get great pleasure and knowledge from debating the opinions of well known people. Limiting to this particular quote what I see him say is:

Islam is an attitude of freedom
Islam may even be a act of defiance to universe

These too IMO are incompatible. Freedom is by nature harmonious to the universe. That is why the bird or you sing a happy tune when you're happy. You don't sing a happy song when taking up cudgels against some injustice.

Anyway....I'm of to my glass of limoncello now so perhaps I should be thinking Umar Khayyam and not Allam Iqbal!

Which reminds me of the next question I wanted to ask you: is the Armstrong in honor of Neil Armstrong? if so man do I have a story for you!

The defiance bit is not to be taken as literally as you just took it to be.

Its after Karen Armstrong

Don't listen to what anyone says, fact is you can't be a general unless your Chacha's an administrator. Armstrong is what he is because of desi style nepotism!

so be itand Maira you better be right. nepotism is good. Hey administrators! any of yuall have a good looking girl you're trying to marry away? I am in the market for buying a generalship!

I notice they made you a 'senior' is that because you have friends in high places or just got too old?

It's easy. You don't have to have friends in high places. Just suck up to @WebMaster as much as you can. She pretends to not like it, but in no time you'll be a senior like me. :)

By sucking up to me you will get perks. No doubt. @Maira La
