Why? it means no one buys it. The printed media is dying all over the world and thus major dailies around the world have transformed themselves into the digital online news sources. With business coming from online ads and subscription plans. In the time of social media, people do not have the money and time to buy paper-based newspapers.

Lots of newspapers were living beyond thier means with archaic business models. All over the world Print media is scraping by, surviving on small profit margins and relying on thier electronic sister sites for ad revenue.

In Pakistan the online platforms are not that great and also don't really have that much in terms of ads (from the private sector). They rely on public sector ads (no doubt in exchange for favourable reporting). The government has cut down on the government ads as part of the austerity drive so lots of papers are finding a shortfall in cash.

When did you last buy a paper? Younger people get news online, other people get news from the TV.

Also in some cases billionaire owners have been holding back wages and now using this as a reason to get rid of employees.

True. Take Dawn which I think owned Herald. It's contributors can barely hide their distaste for Pakistan. The only one of them i give some respect to is Parvez hoodbuoy. I can excuse his pieces because they often do contain very solid analysis and being a fine scientist there is some rationale in his writing even if he is trans-national which is common with scientists of his rank. However we have then a choice selection of Pakistan bashers. Cyril Almedia, Irfan Hussain who can barely hide his hatred for Imran Khan. And then we have Mahir Ali who sounds more Indian with his anti Chinese and very Indo centric pieces. Dawn needs closing down.

PM IK needs to learn from Erdogan how he muzzled the media.

I remember that before 2010, my father would read all the main headlines from all the major English and Urdu newspapers, before 9:00 AM every morning and then he would keep scavenging them for articles and editorials through out the day, resting in his arm-chair. But later, he shifted to rely on the internet and TV-channels. Then I gifted him the kindle and iPad with subscriptions to many free and paid online news apps so he cancelled rest of the newspapers. I think the similar trend has been replicated in many families and the new generation is already glued to the internet and apps like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter have replaced most of the mainstream media outlets in terms of circulations (shares and reshares).

Another puzzling fact is the mushroom growth of the media industry in Pakistan and every new channel is a news channel, at least how it appears to me while the national economy has been growing at a much slower pace so it was never sustainable and the salaries paid to anchors are absurdly high.. like it has become the most paying profession in Pakistan with the least amount of education required. Many anchors have become billionaires and own their own private airplanes thanks to the lifafas. In USA, starring in a hollywood movie warrants you become rich and famous but in Pakistan the ticket to riches is provided by hosting a political talkshow.
