well, i don't much like mathematics specialists, because mathematics cannot exist without usages in real sciences or in immediate applications ( counting etc )... and because much of modern mathematics is just agreements between academics over hundreds of years... this is similar to grammar experts... grammar rules can mostly be changed or replaced...

but i see that gauss also contibuted to other fields, like optics and astronomy...

I am not a mathematics specialist, just a college student. Our professor once drew a knowledge hierarchy on board. It was something like this,
Physical labourer < Technician < Engineer < Scientist < Mathematician < Philosopher
The knowledge of a mathematician is of a more superior kind than a scientist. It is more abstract and more general and more powerful. Only philosopher is even more abstract and general than a mathematician.
