The Hellenic Navy is edging closer to leasing two FREMM (frégate européenne multi-missions) class frigates from France, the Greek Deputy Defence Minister has announced.

Fotis Kouvelis on 20 April confirmed that an agreement had been reached on a five-year leasing deal that could see two FREMM ships handed over to the Hellenic Navy as early as August 2018.

This follows years of inactivity since the original statement of intent to acquire the FREMMs and months of negotiations between the French and Greek governments.

Kouvelis also hinted that a further two vessels of unknown design could be procured in the future. It is widely speculated that the FREMM deal is a stop-gap solution until the Hellenic Navy formally agrees on the procurement of new vessels of the Gowind- or Belh@rra-class after the FREMM leasing agreement ends in about 2023.

Payment is believed to be connected to European Central Bank bonds, although precise details have yet to emerge.

So basically the mug called the German taxpayer will be paying for it?

. .
Well who is going to pay it?
Uncertain, but Greece will want to use PESCO against Turkey. This is a more important issue.
Because it will not be easy for Greece to keep up with a long-term weapon race. The market struggle between France and Germany is a separate matter. But in the long term Turkey and as well as England's national interests can be threaten over PESCO.

Istanbul class will be the answer, 64 missile armed with essm. Turkish anti ship missile and a lot of systems. For now our Gabya class is enough, the only thing what Fremm have is stealthy featured.

france is offering very generous terms, almost too good to be true. note, these ships will most likely be the asw variant

Well not much capability like a corvette more. Depends on the money?

As a stop-gap solution, Turkey trying to get two frigates from FMS for about 5 years. However, if you a look to the current US-Turkey relations, this is not an easy process.

As regards domestic production, 8 corvette planning was revised 5 years ago as 4 corvette-4 frigates. I-class frigates followed by AAW frigates in the second half of 2020s (tf-2000). Also, Barbaros class frigates will serve for a long time after the mid-life modernization.

The Turkish Navy is given priority to the localization and modernization within the vision of 2033. Therefore, from time to time there will be differences in active frigate numbers. In short, in the 2020s we will not see a Turkish fleet expanding in number probably, but expanding its total tonnage and strike-capability with great possibility.

What a better way for France to piss off our Turkish friends by leasing and selling frigates to Greece and supporting their territorial claims/sovereignty ? ;) :enjoy:

Reports say the FREMMs Languedoc and Aquitaine, which are already in service, could be leased to the Greek navy the time their first Belh@rra frigate is delivered. However that remains to be confirmed.
