Despite a directive to shun suit and ties from March to November, a few of the ministers appeared at Monday’s meeting wearing them.
The Cabinet Division on Sept 1, 2009 had issued an order for the male employees in government, semi-government and autonomous offices to stop wearing suit and ties from March to November, except on formal occasions.
The order was reissued on Jun 5, 2012 to remind the employees about putting on short- or full-sleeved shirts and trousers in summer to cut use of air-conditioners in the power-starved nation.
Power shortfalls are especially acute in the hot summer months from March to November.
A minister, preferring anonymity, told reporters, the prime minister asked those in suits why they had them on in summer.
“It is an outfit suitable for the British. It has become your habit after being slaves to the British,” the minister quoted the prime minister as saying.
Railway Minister Mazibul Haque, State Minister for Labour Mujibul Haque Chunnu, State Minister for Sports Biren Sikder, State Minister for Finance MA Mannan, State Minister for Health Zahid Malik were the few who broke the dress code, a state minister said.
Another minister said, “Right after Roads Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said something in a low voice to the prime minister, she raised the issue of the dress code.”
On most occasions, and almost always in the Secretariat, Obaidul Quader is seen sporting a suit and tie. However, he attended Monday’s meeting without them.
Most of the officials were yet to arrive when the meeting began around 10am and the prime minister raised the issue, said the minister who asked not to be named.
One of the ministers asked if he should wear Pajama-Panjabi instead.
Hasina rejected the suggestion forthwith, stressing the dress code laid down by the government.
