To say 2014 was a turbulent year for Jang/Geo Group and its owner Mir Shakil ur Rehman would be a major (no pun intended) understatement. The privately owned media group went through hell and back with its rendezvous with Pakistani Armed Forces especially Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) over the Hamid Mir Attack. But has Mir Shakil ur Rehman’s crafty and tested strategy of duplicity and perseverance finally turned the tables for Geo Network with all this left behind in past? This sudden resurge of Geo as claimed by sources closed to Mir Shakil is an outcome of a silent surrender by the armed forces in this Media Tactical War similar to that during the 1971 war.
Is this a Genuine Claim?
Since the very beginning of the controversy, Geo showed its adamant stance of it being “cornered into this tight spot by perpetrators within the Establishment” and voiced its point of view vehemently throughout Hamid Mir attack as well as Blasphemy saga. The media group even went ahead with sending a legal notice to ISI “for defaming and maligning the group” and asked ISI to“publicly apologize within 14 days and pay damages of Rs50 billion.”
The network also faced a mass reflux from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Leader Imran Khan and his followers for being a media outlet having a “detrimental approach towards Pakistan” as well as raising questions on the alleged white-collar corruption carried out by the owner of the group, Mir ShakilurRehman. For months, national top trends on Pakistani social media like #BanGeo, #ShutupGeo and #BoycottGeo remained to be severely critical of Geo and its ownership with the massive outburst from PTI supporters online.

Has all this debacle made Geo turn into a new leaf? Not exactly.. Jang and Geo network is still vocal and unwavering in terms of being critical towards army, ISI, and PTI and the opposing parties while still triumphantly riding the comfortable sails of rising profits – thanks to Network owners’ determination as well as the widely available distractions for our nation.
