PUNE: The joint military exercise of India and China concluded on Tuesday with the defence establishments of both countries agreeing to continue such friendship efforts in future.
"The two countries will scale up attempts of bringing both armies on same platform; specially to fight terrorism at the global level," read a joint statement issued at the concluding ceremony of the Counter Insurgency (CI) and Counter Terrorism (CT) joint exercises named "Hand-in-Hand."
The special training capsule of 12 days was held at the College of Military Engineering (CME) and Aundh Military Station.
"The military exercise was a good step. We have learnt new techniques. We also got a platform to share our experiences," said Lt General Zhou Xiaozhou, Chief of Staff, Chengdu Military Command, People's Liberation Army of China.
"A frank interaction, such as this exercise, will help in improving relations between both army organisations. We will increase such joint events," he said.
Lt General K Surendranath, chief of staff of Southern Command, said that new ideas and techniques were learnt during the exercise. "Both armies had good interactions. This will lead to better co-operation and regular joint exercises. More senior level officers from both the sides will join the next sessions," he said.
Xiaozhou and Surendranath said that working together has proved beneficial for the army personnel of both countries. The joining of hands between India and China will help at the global level; not only for peace, but also for prosperity, read the statement.
On the last day of the session, a joint tactical exercise was conducted where a cordon and search operation was carried out by troops.
The joint teams of Indian and Chinese army men fought dummy terrorists using modern weaponry, helicopters and water boats.
Speaking to reporters on the successful conclusion of the programme, Indian army officials said that Pune is likely to get an important role for more such activities in future.
"Importance of Pune as a defence hub is known. The presence of various training institutes in and around the city will create conducive atmosphere for joint military training. The exercises at CMC have shown that we are capable of hosting CI and CT training. After Belgaum and Bhatinda, Pune can be an option," said an army official.
