Columnist Kamal Siddiqui in his article says price of a domestic return flight Karachi/Islamabad would touch Rs. 50,000 during Eid days whereas for the same distance a return fare Mumbai/Delhi is Rs. 25,000. Giving a break-up of variable costs involved, he calculated that it should not be more than Rs. 15,000 for Karachi/Islamabad. On the international sector he quotes Oman Air charging Rs. 49,000 for a return flight Karachi-Muscat and Emirates Rs. 51,000. He finally writes that there are two aspects in price fixation – competition on the one hand and the monopolistic tendencies on the other hand. Finally he is of the opinion that PIA is a perpetual loss-making and never is going to change its this “status”.
2. So much has been said and written on our bed ridden sick PIA that adding something more would just be a foolish step. One liner is that PIA is in the hands of some masked faces mafia whose lifeline depends on keeping airline alive through bailout Oxygen, charging “extra” in the Islamic Republic pick pocketing “extra” from umrah ad haj travellers for the same distance Pakistan/Jeddah and our so called “suo motos” remaining silent.
3. There are different ways for “self welfare” of this mafia. PIA operated for 40 years a “half-flight” Karachi/Bahrain/Karachi. Believe it a half flight, never had a full flight. Shuttle flight operated once a week except or a limited period twice a week. It started from Karachi with 50% passengers destined for Bahrain and 50% for Doha/Qatar. 50% when disembarked at Bahrain, 50% new for Karachi were embarked from there. Flight then landed at Qatar, 50% destined for Doha disembarked when 50% new passenger from there destined for Karachi embarked. PIA since two years has stopped touching Bahrain, closed its office and removed Bahrain from its map.
3. On the other hand Gulf Air starting from 4 flights a week today is operating on this route 4 days two flights weekly and three day one flight daily. A very meaningful point arises as to why PIA kept “forver” a half flight weekly while the other kept increasing its flights on the same route. For some mysterious reasons, which can’t be other than vested interests, that no other airline is being allowed to operate on this most lucrative route as many tried hard. Why? The answer is very simple which lies in any honest suo-moto, JIT or if a self-less ruler ever touched the real one point agenda viz investigating personal life style of all connected; may those be in CAA, PIA or in the concerned Ministry. Such a real dream-investigation will solve of unanswered questions of ever increasing domestic fares, discarding lucrative international routes for others to occupy etc. But this old knew well at least in the distant uture this is a pipe dream.
