Defense PSU Hindustan Aeronautic Limited (HAL) will be integrating an ELTA’s ELM-2052 Airborne AESA Fire Control Radar (FCR) procured originally for the Jaguar Display Attack Ranging Inertial Navigation (DARIN III) upgrade program in its preparation for the manufacturing upgraded 83 Tejas Mk1A which company plans to test many of the features and equipment before first Tejas Mk1A jet is ready for first flight by 2023.

The ELM-2052 is an advanced Fire Control Radar (FCR) designed for air-to-air superiority and strike missions, based on fully solid-state Active Ellectronically Scanning Array (AESA) technology, enabling the radar to achieve

  1. long detection ranges,
  2. high mission reliability and
  3. multi-target tracking capabilities.
The ELM-2052 radar provides simultaneous modes of operation supporting multi-mission capabilities for air-to-air, air-to-ground and air-to-sea operation modes, and weapon deployment.

EL/M-2052 Elta HAL radar is a GaN-based radar with 1500 TRMs. It can track 64 targets simultaneously. It has a range of 290 km in the Air to Sea Mode while in the Air to Air Mode, it is rumored to be between 150 to 200 km for a 1 sq.m RCS, not 3 sq.m

Another very authoritative source says that based on the TRM module count and power output a good initial ballpark estimate would suggest that EL/M 2052 radar might be comparable to APG-77 or APG-81 radars. This information is kept secretive but India and Israel might be planning to develop EL/M-2052 version that uses gallium nitride TRMs.


By analogy to the Saab GlobalEye AESA radar (which was produced in GaAs and GaN versions), a GaN version of the EL/M 2052 might have up to 70% greater range than the APG-77 or APG-81 based estimate.

Link for existing radar ELM-2032 specs. Which according to manufacturer is 2-3KVA system, provided GaN transistors are very efficient but if Tejas is making the jump to 10KW it needs a major revamp in it's power and cooling systems. I doubt this will happen as this is the power level on a SU-30. Realistically could be that the version that will finally equip the Tejas be a down throttled version.

Yes, the EL/M 2052 is scalable. Even the small nose of the Jag is able to accommodate the Radar

Yes true but this creates a marketing ploy by manufacturer. They are quoting max possible capabilities and this is what most people will assume. When in fact the radar will have different scaled variants according to aircraft power and nose size limit. I was reading the comments under the article and someone pointed out its a GaN based radar but TRMs are GaS, havnt made move to GaN based TRMs yet.

Neverthless good development for India, if HAL is smart it will get weapon integration rights from Israel otherwise Israeli's will be charging extra or push their own weapons only sabotaging local developments.

Yes, this article may not be accurate.
Weapons integration will not be a big deal, these things are planned well in advance.

So after 5 years chai biskuts of HAL finally preparing to test an aesa radar on some lsp. What a great decision.
No protypes flying but it wud be delivered for service in 2023 according to Wikipedia.
As someone said,,, very well planned in advance.

No ToT for ELM-2052 ? India just bought it and install?

I thought mark1a was having the uttam aesa radar and intergrated with Astra bvr.

I am happy with either option
Lca cockpit and radar and hms is the best in Indian air force bar the Rafale.
The user interface class cockpit and the major smart screen are light years from.the switches and dials found on Russian legacy fighters.
For me tejas is two generation leap for. Mig21 and mig27 and even one generation on mig29.

Of course the Russian mig29 has far more punch and power but the tejas is small nimble and smart plane concept

I compare this jet with JF-17, the specs looks similar, thrust, empty weight and so on.
LCA-Tejas first flight was 20 years ago. LCA-Tejas's rival is going to retire when LCA-Tejas mass produced.

US$64 million for LCA-Tejas Mk. 1A (2020). Nice price.
US$77.9M (lot 14) for F-35A

If you consider the labour costs in India, you can see how inflated that LCA price is. Tells you how inefficient HAL is, or there is some serious profiteering going on there..

Tejas as of now inducted in very small number. As the number grow cost will automatically come down.
Its just a plan economics. Simply take the example of F35.
