NEW DELHI: Virender Sehwag said today that anyone threatening student Gurmehar Kaur with rape+ "is the lowest form of life" and that the Delhi University (DU) student "has a right to express her views."

She has a right to express her views and anyone who threatens her with violence or rape is the lowest form of life.

The former opening batsman for India dragged himself into what some call a needless controversy+ created by some people who circulated an old pro-peace social media post of Gurmehar's who had said over a year ago that "war killed my father".

This is what he had said.

Today, he attempted to clarify what he meant, although many have criticized him for the damage already done.

My tweet was an attempt to be facetious rather than one to bully anyone over their opinion. Agreement or disagreement wasn't even a factor.

Sehwag was joined in his (what some called) "bullying" by national wrestlers Yogeshwar Dutt and Babita Phogat.

Everyone has a right to express their views without being bullied or threatened. Gurmehar Kaur or the Phogat sisters.

The student of Lady Shri Ram College - the institution stands by Gurmehar - had said on social media+ after last week's violence at DU's north campus, that she wasn't afraid of RSS student group Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Many students said ABVP members allegedly instigated and carried out the violence against those protesting+ the cancellation of a seminar at Ramjas College, where a controversial student was scheduled to speak.

Yesterday, Phogat, too, condemned the rape threats against Gurmehar. She criticized her too for her views.

I condemn rape threats If log iss tarah se dhamki de rahe h to ye bahut hi galat bat h.Lekin m aapne desh k khilaf single word nhi sun sakti https://t.co/ImlEb4dj6c

Today, Dutt also attempted to clarify.

I am not against #GurmeharKaur , I respect her, she is the daughter of a Shaheed, I just have a different view: Yogeshwar Dutt pic.twitter.com/EO0Hp8haUq

Yesterday, even as students of DU and JNU came out in large numbers to protest last week's violence on the campus, Gurmehar said she he has had enough of the controversy surrounding her social media post condemning last week's "violence by ABVP".

"I have been through a lot and this is all that my 20-year-old self could take...I request to be left alone," said Gurmehar in a Facebook post.
