Gurdaspur district of Punjab woke up to a terror attack early Monday morning. Five terrorists dressed in Army uniform opened fire at the Dinanagar police station. Till now, 12 policemen, 2 convicts inside the lock-up, 6 civilians and 2 terrorists have been killed in the cross-firing that began around 5.30 a.m on Monday.

While the situation is being tackled with more than 300 soldiers on the spot, statements and comments about the issue are being made by those in power and by common people. Among the many, one tweet by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has become the centre of a controversy of sorts. The tweet says:

The public opinion is now split into two sides - one which blames Kejriwal and Aam Aadmi Party of supporting the Khalistan movement and the other which is upset about questioning the patriotism and nationalism of Punjabis and Sikhs. Amid all of this, a video of Aam Aadmi Party leader Jarnail Singh accepting the demand of Khalistan has re-surfaced -

The conversation on Twitter clearly shows the divide between those who consider the Gurdaspur attack to be a master-plan of Pakistani Khalistan activists to dig up the issue and diverge the focus from the Kashmir issue and of those who consider it an act by either PM Narendra Modi or by Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi CM Arwind Kejriwal. Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted
He further tweeted It is to be considered that Omar Abdullah hinted at the terrorists being linked to the Khalistan movement.

Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa made a statement that said "I fear it could be a joint operation between the Jammu and Kashmir terrorists and Khalistani terrorists who are under training in Pakistan's Punjab."

The commander of Operation Blue Star against pro-Khalistan millitants, Lt General KS Brar said "Cannot say that it is revival of the Khalistani movement. ISI wants to take the Punjab back to what was in the 1980s. The state government has been weak. State government wants to release the terrorists. It is disturbing to note that terrorists have come across the border."

However, it is saddening that the patriotism of the Sikh population in India is being questioned, and that people are jumping to baseless assumptions and conclusions.

The Khalistan movement seeks to create a separate country - Khalistan (meaning the land of the pure).

Here are some reactions from the Twitverse. It is quite evident that those who are trending #Khalistan are from Pakistan.

Indians on the other hand want to wait for the truth to unfold before reaching any conclusions.

New Delhi: Congress parliamentarian from Ludhiana, Ravneet Singh Bittu, said on Monday that the terrorist attack in Punjab`s Gurdaspur district was an attempt to revive the Khalistan movement in the state and urged the Punjab and central governments to immediately take necessary steps to stop it.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
"The terrorist attack in Gurdaspur is a very serious threat to the nation. Since the last few months, there have been attempts to revive the Khalistan movement but the state and central agencies were continuously ignoring it. After this attack, both the Centre and state governments should act tough against such elements," Bittu told IANS.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
He said that Pakistan`s Inter-Services Intelligence, Khalistani and other terrorist groups have joined hands in support of the Khalistan movement.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
"Yesterday (Sunday), pro-Khalistan slogans were raised in front of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. For the last few months, these activities have increased but were not dealt with properly by both the governments," he added.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
Bittu said that the "wrong policies" of the state and central governments gave an opportunity to Khalistan supporters to revive their movement.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
"The central government is shifting terrorists lodged in different parts of the country to Punjab. There was no need for it. Why are terrorists from Bengaluru and Bareilly being shifted to Punjab jails," asked Bittu.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
The Congress leader also accused the Badal government in Punjab of "adopting soft approach" towards Surat Singh Khalsa, who is on a hunger strike since January this year to seek permanent release of Sikh political prisoners.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
He said that bowing to the demands of Surat Singh, the Punjab government had released many political prisoners and this mistake of the government had boosted the morale of Khalistan supporters.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
He demanded that the Punjab government immediately end its soft approach towards Surat Singh Khalsa and try to end his hunger strike.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
Bittu said that he will soon meet union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and present the related facts to him. He also said that he will request the home minister to visit Punjab to take stock of the rising activities of the Khalistan supporters.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
The Congress parliamentarian said that it was wrong to link the terrorist attack in Gurdaspur to the Mumbai serial blast convict Yakub Memon`s impending hanging.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
"It will be a mistake to link the Gurdaspur terror attack to Memon. I am from Punjab and I know what is going on there. If the government doesn`t learn lessons from this attack, the situation in Punjab is going to become worse," he said.
https://defence.pk/members/abingdonboy.28303/
He said Punjab needed to be more alert and vigilant. "We have seen the darkest decade not long ago and lost thousands of precious lives and we cannot afford that again," he warned.

Pakistan's Establishment is desperately trying to revive the so called 'Khalistan movement', but it will never succeed.

Three or four a$$holes infiltrated from across is obviously not going to change Punjab into Khalistan!

Get real. It's never ever going to happen. The Sikh terrorists sitting in Pakistan have next to zero following in Punjab.

Some Pakistanis are truly despicable, I'm not one for conspiracy theories but this is the second time this MONTH that I have seen Khalistan trending IN PAKISTAN- those guys are clearly trying to start something.

Literally the only place I hear/see Khalistan mentioned these days is here on PDF (by Pak members) and on twitter (by Pakistanis). Again, Pakistani are being short-sighted in their pathetic attempts to "bleed" India as they fail to realise that "Khalistan" would seek to be carved out of Pakistan's Punjab too (the source of Pakistan's treasury and military)!

This happened not long ago before khalistani attacked police station

Radicals disrupt CM’s speech, raise pro-Khalistan slogans

Patiala, July 26

Two activists of the SAD (A) today entered the hall at Punjabi University, where Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was presiding over the installation ceremony of Bhagwan Parshuram Chair for Indian Literature and Culture, and raised pro-Khalistan and anti-government slogans. The activists, who were identified as Saroop Singh Sandah and Rajinder Singh Channa, started shouting slogans as soon as Badal began his speech towards the end of the programme. While the CM’s security personnel rushed and surrounded him, the police took the activists into custody and whisked them away. The police have taken four activists into preventive custody. They are Saroop Singh, Rajinder Singh, Gurdhyan Singh and Darshan Singh. Badal then cautioned people to ignore such elements. He said some forces inimical to the progress of the state were bent on disrupting its hard-earned peace, but he would not allow such forces to succeed. The Chief Minister said Punjab had suffered a lot due to such conspiracies in the past, but the SAD-BJP alliance government was keeping a strict vigil to foil the nefarious designs of such elements. Soliciting the proactive support and cooperation of media and general public for this cause, he said every one should join hands to make Punjab an epitome of peace and communal brotherhood. Paying tributes to Bhagwan Parshuram, the CM exhorted the people to imbibe the ideals propagated by him so that justice and equality could be ensured in society. He was accompanied by Cabinet Minister Surjit Singh Rakhra. Devi Dyal Prashar, president, Sri Brahmin Sabha, Punjab. Prashar said the Brahmin Sabha would support to the Akali Dal during the 2017 Assembly poll.

wake up, Pakistan have nothing to do with this.

The incident took place around 5-30 a.m. when the terrorists, who are suspected to have sneaked in through the Indo-Pakistan border in Jammu, first targeted a bus ferrying civilians and then stormed into the police station.

Following an alert, combing operations led to discovery of five improvised explosive devices on the railway tracks connecting Dinanagar to Pathankot. The National Security Guard has also been rushed in to carry out bomb detection and disposal operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting with Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and other senior government functionaries to take a stock of the situation.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, currently on a visit to Madhya Pradesh, also talked to Punjab Chief Minister and offered all possible assistance.

“Some terrorists have entered a police station [Dinanagar] and action has been initiated. I have talked to National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Union Home Secretary L.C. Goyal about it and forces have already been rushed in and the operation is under way. I have asked the Border Security Force Director-General to intensify surveillance near the border (with Pakistan). The situation is under control,” Mr. Singh told the media.

You're either embarrassingly naïve or blatantly lying. The connections between the ISI and Khalistan (and other so-called separatist movements in India) during the 1980s/90s are well known. Once the ISI backed away from supporting them the Khalistan movement died pretty quickly- didn't it?

I'm not Sikh according to you? Are you?

I'm telling you, come to India, or heck even here to the UK, go to a Sikh area and start this cr@p about Khalistan, I'm not saying you'll get a beating but.......

They have been trying for 2 years now. They won't succeed in this. ISI has a problem of changing priorities too often. That makes things worse (for them). Their drug trade in Punjab on the other hand was a huge success. But now they are channeling funds entirely to the creating a terror apparatus in Punjab. There is a change though. The funds are going to the few Muslim groups. ISI no longer trusts the Sikhs and with good reason.

Your country lives on the basis of hatred and lies. Being Pakistani is more like being anti-Indian. You have no identity. You follow our culture. You claim our history as yours. You speak our language. You watch our movies. Your country is a slave minded buddy. Its very sad i see you posting nothing good about your own country for your own benefit, but always bad about India. Really feel sorry for you. :)

what "khalistan", this was a jihadi attack

Punjab Police personnel said on Monday they heard terrorists shout 'Allah hu Akbar' — Arabic for 'God is great' — before three attackers were killed after an intense gunfight in Gurdaspur district, indicating the assault was a suicide attack.

Khalistani leaders are on record saying that they never received any help, but they wished that ISI supported them so khalistan could become reality.

This attack in particular do not seems to be the work of any khalistan supporters as yet because they have since long left this armed route and have shifted to foreign countries and treying there to sustain a political uprising, this is more of a political maneuvering by Cong, Akalis and AAP in state politics

"revival" of Khalistan actually made me laugh out loud, how can something that has NEVER existed be revived?

The fact of the matter is 99.99999999% of Sikhs have NO desire whatsoever for a Sikh homeland- this isn't even what Sikhi teaches, under Ranjit Singh and the Sikh Empire the Empire wasn't proclaimed "Khalistan" and for Sikhs only, it was a pluralist and open society with rights for all- effectively what India is today.

When these attackers almost certainly were PAKISTANI (being Muslim is an aside) we are talking about a "revival" of the Khalistani movement? Wishful thinking doesn't even begin to cover this level of utter delusion.

Get some help buddy and leave us Sikhs alone, we want NOTHING to do with you and your ilk.
