Gun violence diminishes US image in China

If gun violence is a consideration in assessing Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again," it is by no means good news for the US. Although it has not received much attention, a recent shooting in South Nashville, Tennessee is surely a case study for Chinese wanting to better understand the US.

A 74-year-old Chinese man was gunned down while picking up trash outside his South Nashville home last week. The investigation is ongoing. Only a few US mainstream media outlets covered the incident. Shootings are an all too frequent occurrence in the US, and in this case the victim was an elderly Chinese man. From the perspective of "news value," the South Nashville shooting doesn't meet the standard of "novelty" and "impact," and therefore, the US media have apparently diverted their attention from the tragedy to more eye-catching events such as "Russiagate" and Trump's Asia tour.

From October's mass shooting at a music festival on the Las Vegas Strip and this month's Texas church massacre, to last week's senseless murder in Tennessee, the frequency of gun murders in the US has astounded the world. Statistics from the Gun Violence Archive shows the number of gun-related incidents has reached 53,446 in 2017, resulting in more than 13,000 deaths and covering almost all US states. Astonishing, isn't it? Citizens of few other countries would accept such attacks.

In the past, most Chinese associated the US with sound social welfare, an enviable healthcare system, high-quality education and a friendly environment. Nowadays America's image in the minds of many Chinese is far different. A glance at US-related news mainly features the country's chaotic politics, the fight between Trump and the media, and the unimaginable gun violence. The US is no longer a secure country in the eyes of many Chinese. Worse still, the government has yet to take effective actions to curb gun violence, and American citizens can only hope they are lucky enough to avoid being attacked. Chinese have long been bored by the excuses given by US politicians for their inability to pass effective gun control legislation. Chinese have no right to interfere with US domestic affairs, but we are shocked at the country's indifference to the loss of life.

While Trump continues to mouth the slogan "Make America Great Again," he is failing to ensure the personal security of ordinary US citizens. Instead of deploying incredibly costly military excursions overseas, he should rethink his priorities.

Gun violence in the United States is a major national concern that results in tens of thousands of deaths and injuries annually.[1] In 2013, there were 73,505 nonfatal firearm injuries (23.2 injuries per 100,000 U.S. citizens),[2][3] and 33,636 deaths due to "injury by firearms" (10.6 deaths per 100,000 U.S. citizens).[4]These deaths consisted of 11,208 homicides,[5]21,175 suicides,[4] 505 deaths due to accidental or negligent discharge of a firearm, and 281 deaths due to firearms use with "undetermined intent".[4] Of the 2,596,993 total deaths in the US in 2013, 1.3% were related to firearms.[1][6] The ownership and control of guns are among the most widely debated issues in the country.

In 2010, 67% of all homicides in the U.S. were committed using a firearm.[7] In 2012, there were 8,855 total firearm-related homicides in the US, with 6,371 of those attributed to handguns.[8] In 2012, 64% of all gun-related deaths in the U.S. were suicides.[9]In 2010, there were 19,392 firearm-related suicides, and 11,078 firearm-related homicides in the U.S.[10] In 2010, 358 murders were reported involving a rifle while 6,009 were reported involving a handgun; another 1,939 were reported with an unspecified type of firearm.[11]

Firearms were used to kill 13,286 people in the U.S. in 2015, excluding suicide.[12] Approximately 1.4 million people have been killed using firearms in the U.S. between 1968 and 2011, equivalent to a top 10 largest U.S. city in 2016, falling between the populations of San Antonio and Dallas, Texas.[12]

Compared to 22 other high-income nations, the U.S. gun-related murder rate is 25 times higher.[13]Although it has half the population of the other 22 nations combined, the U.S. had 82 percent of all gun deaths, 90 percent of all women killed by guns, 91 percent of children under 14 and 92 percent of young people between ages 15 and 24 killed by guns.[13] In 2010, gun violence cost U.S. taxpayers approximately $516 million in direct hospital costs.[14]

Gun violence is most common in poor urban areas and frequently associated with gang violence, often involving male juveniles or young adult males.[15][16]Although mass shootings have been covered extensively in the media, mass shootings in the US account for a small fraction of gun-related deaths[17]and the frequency of these events steadily declined between 1994 and 2007, rising between 2007 and 2013.[18][19]

Legislation at the federal, state, and local levels has attempted to address gun violence through a variety of methods, including restricting firearms purchases by youths and other "at-risk" populations, setting waiting periods for firearm purchases, establishing gun buyback programs, law enforcement and policing strategies, stiff sentencing of gun law violators, education programs for parents and children, and community-outreach programs. Despite widespread concern about the impacts of gun violence on public health, Congress has prohibited the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) from conducting research that advocates in favor of gun control.[20] The CDC has interpreted this ban to extend to all research on gun violence prevention, and so has not funded any research on this subject since 1996.[21]

Gun violence is getting to be a normal thing in US. Americans can celebrate if there is no violent shooting in 12 months, but this would be extremely unlikely to happen.

Too many guns are in private hands, and too many people and war veterans have psycho problems.

Not too long ago, some black guy walked up to a parked Police car in the USA and shot both the Police officers dead because they were "white". In fact one of the police officers was ethnic Chinese and the other one was of Hispanic descent.

Just one look at their skin colour and they blasted holes in their skulls. Then the US police gun down some blacks in retaliation. And so on.

Wat is even more amazing is that people get to internalize and accept it.

So, after political apathy (which translates into non-participation in elections), now they need to face violence apathy.

Can be tolerated if this is going to drain on their resources and render their foreign policy less blood-thirsty.
