Guatemala’s president has announced that the Central American country will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, becoming the first country to follow the lead of US president Donald Trump in ordering the change.

Guatemala was one of nine countries that voted with the United States and Israel on Thursday when the UN general assembly overwhelmingly adopted a non-binding resolution denouncing Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Q&A
What will US recognition of Jerusalem mean for the peace process?
Trump didn’t set any timetable for moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and neither did Guatemalan president Jimmy Morales.

In a post on his official Facebook account on Christmas Eve, Morales said following talks with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he decided to instruct the foreign ministry to move the embassy.

No other country has their embassy for Israel in Jerusalem, though the Czech Republic has said it is considering such a move.

Trump upended decades of US policy with his announcement on December that he was recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, which Palestinians saw as siding with Israel on the most sensitive issue in the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, while the Palestinians claim the city’s eastern sector, which was captured by Israel in 1967 and is home to sensitive religious sites. Many governments have long said that the fate of Jerusalem must be resolved through negotiations.

Trump’s announcement has set off weeks of clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces that have left 12 Palestinians dead.

Netanyahu has predicted others would follow the US led. He has made great efforts to reach out to Latin America in recent years as part of a campaign to counter longstanding support for the Palestinians at the United Nations.

Q&A
Why is recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital so contentious?
The resolution passed by the general assembly declared the US action on Jerusalem null and void. The 128-9 vote was a victory for Palestinians, but fell short of the total they had predicted. Thirty-five countries abstained and 21 stayed away from the vote.

Morales, a former television comedian with an important base of conservative Christian support, became embroiled in a bitter spat with the United Nations earlier this year, when a UN-backed anti-corruption body in Guatemala tried to impeach him.

Although Morales avoided impeachment, he failed in an attempt to expel the head of the body, the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, after criticism from the United Nations, the United States and the European Union.

Despite the furore over Washington’s controversial decision to recognize the sacred city of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, Guatemala has decided to follow suit, announcing plans to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv.

Following a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Sunday, the President of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, announced his decision to move the embassy to Jerusalem.

“We talked about the excellent relations we have had as nations since Guatemala supported the creation of the State of Israel,” the president said in a Facebook post, stressing that one of the most relevant issues “was the return of the Guatemalan Embassy to Jerusalem.”

“I inform you that I have given instructions to the Chancellor to initiate the respective coordination” to move the embassy, Morales said in his brief post, without stating whether or not the country recognizes Jerusalem as the state capital.

The Central American country was one of just nine states to support the US decision during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) vote this week. On Thursday, the UNGA overwhelmingly passed a non-binding resolution condemning Donald Trump’s declaration to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and called on member states not to move their diplomatic missions to the Holy City. The non-binding UNGA resolution was backed by 128 states, while 35 countries abstained. Guatemala, Honduras, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Togo, the US and Israel voted in favor of the US decision. The UNGA vote followed the US veto of a UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution Monday. All other UNSC members voted in favor of a motion to rescind Donald Trump’s move.

“We are absolutely certain that it is the right route,” Morales said earlier this week of Washington's recognition of Jerusalem, adding, that Israel is an “ally of Guatemala and we must support it.”

Tel Aviv has been urging other countries to follow America's example to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. On Friday, Netanyahu said a number of countries are “seriously considering” moving their embassies to Jerusalem. While the Israeli PM did not name the countries contemplating such a move, he did reveal that Israel is now engaged in a concerted diplomatic campaign to muster support for Israel.

Despite repeated warnings by global and regional powers, Trump declared Jerusalem the capital of Israel on December 6, triggering a strong backlash and widespread condemnation. Following the announcement, massive anti-Israeli and anti-American rallies erupted across the region.

The most intense clashes are playing out in Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza, as Palestinians rally angrily against the decision and Hamas urging a new intifada (uprising). The Israeli crackdown on protesters has been brutal. Over 10 people have been killed and hundreds of others injured as Israeli security forces fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannons to suppress demonstrators.

Not that Guatemala can be considered a "sovereign country" but for whatever it's worth, there ya go. Micronesia is next. :)

would be expecting those that abstained or voted No to follow. Eventually as time passes and reality kicks in with israel's de facto administration of Jerusalem, i would also expect those that voted yes to change their minds n relocate their embassy to Jerusalem

point of my post above = more countries would follow

It's known that several nations prior to the US recognition were planning on doing so. Other major international players aren't going to.

'It's known'

like who? i googled 3 pages of the topic but none ever came up and the nearest ever suggesting this was Netanyahu quoting that several countries(claimed by him) were planning to do. And how do u know the other major countries would not follow?

Perhaps u have insider information?

.
Will Pope Francis DISOWN these so-called "Catholic countries" of Guatemala and Honduras since they seem to prefer sucking on US's cock waaay more than following his religious leadership?

Why should they? as far as i've researched, The Vatican's stand is that the status quo remains, but they have never stated they are against the relocation of other nation's embassy to Jerusalem, nor have they ever disagreed with the idea of Jerusalem being Israel's undivided capital.
