Greek Air Force Intercepts Turkish F-16s on Christmas Day

By Philip Chrysopoulos

Dec 26, 2018

Violations of Greek airspace by Turkish warplanes over the Aegean continued on Christmas Day, with Hellenic Air Force jets intercepting the aircraft according to international regulations.

Two pairs of Turkish F-16s flew over the Greek islands of Kastelorizo, Stroggyli and Rho in the afternoon, at an altitude of over 27,000 feet, and then immediately departed the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR).

According to the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA), two Turkish F-16 fighter jets entered the Athens FIR without submitting a flight plan at 15:04 GMT, flew over Kastelorizo and Stroggyli at an altitude of 27,000 feet, and exited the Athens FIR within the same minute.

Three minutes later, at 15:07 GMT, another pair of Turkish F-16s entered the Athens FIR, also without submitting a flight plan, flew over the island of Rho at an altitude of 28,000 feet, and immediately exited the Athens FIR.

The Turkish aircraft were identified and intercepted by Greek fighter jets in accordance with the international rules of engagement.

The incident came a day after Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos harshly criticized Turkish military and political officials. Kammenos’ statements were in response to hostile comments made earlier by several Turkish authorities.

These fun things continue between countries to keep each other at their toes :)

Greek Air Force counts 125 deaths in 81 incidents since 1990

14 F-4
13 Mirage 2000
13 A-7 Corsair
12 F-16
6 F-1 Mirage

btw Mirage pilot Nikos Sialmas and F-16 pilot Kostas Eliakis died in the Aegean while trying to intercept a pair of Turkish F-16s in 1992 and 2006

We dont need to kill Greek pilots , they are killing themselves

There is no violation. We just paid a visit to celebrate their x-mas. Hostile Greeks, bad neighbor... :(
Greeks are Orthodox. We celebrate Christmas on January, 7th.
P.S. I am sorry for disinformation. Greeks celebrate it with Catholic church.

The Greeks think the whole Aegen sea belongs to them even the islands right next to Turkey which can be seen with naked eyes that's why the moment Turkish aircraft leave heartland even just a little bit becomes a "violation" but actually, it's a routine flight.

Maybe it was Santa bringing in Christmas gifts!

The current Greek aggression is not based on the quantity but the quality (due to Balyoz, Ergenekon etc. cases); and the current phase of Greek aggression is legitimization of the new ''statu quo'' (in favor of Greece) via new (countries) leverage on the occupied islands in the Agean, as done in Cyprus right now.

While Greeks do follow their national interests opposed to Turkey in Agean and Mediterranean seas, what is the current government interested in right now?

Lets first look at where that Island is.

We know in a Ideal Greek world Turkey wont act outside of its shores but we are not in that world and Turkey will certainly never accept unrealistic Greek demands such as 12 nmi etc.

What Greece calls a violation is only a stone throw away from Turkish coast, the things will only get worse now that the EEZ discussion started.

Greek demands are unrealistic and unfair which explains why Turkey started to expand its navy heavily.
