Greece and Italy sign ‘historic’ maritime borders accord

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and his Italian counterpart Luigi Di Maio on Tuesday inked a maritime borders agreement delimiting an exclusive economic zone (EEZ) between the two countries.

The agreement, which was signed by the two foreign ministers during a visit by Di Maio to Athens and is an extension of a 1977 accord, paves the way for Greece and Italy to explore for and exploit marine resources.

It also paves the way for Greece to reach a similar deal with neighboring Albania.

“The delimitation of maritime zones with all of our neighbors in the context of international law is a consistent objective for this country,” Dendias said in comments after signing the agreement.

In a regular press briefing earlier in the day, government spokesman Stelios Petsas hailed the agreement as “a development of historical significance.”

The agreement comes amid months of mounting tension between Greece, Cyprus and Turkey and also after Ankara signed a contentious accord with the Tripoli-based government in Libya it claims gives it exploration and drilling rights in parts of the Eastern Mediterranean that overlap the Greek continental shelf.

“The delimitation of maritime zones is accomplished with valid agreements, not with invalid ones like that signed by Turkey and [the Libyan government] al-Sarraj and with maps unilaterally submitted to the United Nations,” Dendias said on Tuesday.

Dendias and Di Maio had met in Rome in February to discuss further cooperation between the two countries in the energy sector in the eastern Mediterranean, where Greece and Italy are partners on the EastMed gas pipeline project.

The EEZ agreement had been under negotiation for several years as the two sides hashed out the details, particularly with regard to reservations expressed by Rome over fishing rights in the Ionian Sea.

In addition to the Greek official opinion above, let's discuss the potential effects of this unsuccessful agreement:

A Greek opposition Syriza Party deputy and former Foreign Minister Kozias, criticized the government and said: 'Unfortunately, the agreement signed with Italy is far behind the agreement that we negotiated in time. In the continental shelf agreement signed in 1977, Diaponia Island was given more areas especially in the north and now we gave up from this.'

In fact, there is another example: An Exclusive Economic Zone Agreement was signed between Greece and Albania in 2009. The first deal gave rights to the Greek islands in the Adriatic as much as the mainland of Albania. The side border also used for Greece's favor.

We sent report which we prepared about this to Albania. We warned Albania that they are being deceived. Although the agreement was signed, Albania objected to Greece and said the agreement was unlawful. Then they started a legal struggle regarding the agreement and canceled the agreement.

Greece is constantly asking for the islands to be recognized as equal maritime jurisdictions like the mainland, but could not convince either Albania or Italy. However, Greece has a claim against Turkey in the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean with constantly using the same arguments.

While it is not even possible to see Meis Island on the map, they want to ignore the coasts of Anatolia and have an Eastern Mediterranean by saying 'Hey, there is a continental shelf'. Behind this courage lies The aggressive activity of Greek diplomats.

In addition, if they were an agreement between Italy with Albania and Libya, some areas that Greece had owned would be theirs. Therefore, it is quite normal for Libya and Albania to object to this agreement. Side borders were drawn in favor of Greece regardless of the rights of third countries. Two Muslim countries Libya and Albania are excluded.

Being a little bit unaware of the exact problem, is there any possibility that Turkey and Greece can solve this problem in an international court of arbitration?....It worked for Romania and Ukraine a few years ago.

.
Greece wants a EEZ thats three times the size of its landmass while leaving much bigger Turkey only a fraction of it, if Greece wants a peaceful coexistence then it must stop its delusional claims and try to reach an understanding with Turkey in a fair share of EEZ.

Impossible to solve with Greece, you can go read article about EEZ claim in the Bahama's. Absurd claims like Greece what not juridical feasible. Greece is trying with force to accept his neighbours with the help of EU. Like Spain stealing other EEZ with island claim, not going to happen untill you want to fight for it.

Together with Southern Greek Side of Cyprus(which is divided after eoka's coup) , Greece is trying to hijack the EEZ areas of 7 countries. All others are Muslim states, except Israel. For this, They tries to instrumentalize the political, economic and military power of the EU for theirself. Already Greek territorial waters have become the main field of activity of PESCO. Despite a large inventory, we closely monitoring their really low level of readiness of the navies for any potential conflict.

The second factor is that Greece trying to manipulate non-EU east-Med countries in accordance with their policy who have problems with TR recently.

Egypt or someone else ...These countries abandoning theirs potential natural gas fields and rich fishing beds to Greece (in fact the EU oil companies) and may be thinking of convicting TR to only its land area. (To understand who is subsidizing these cost differences, we need to look at the gulf area.)

However, this business style has the potential to harm these countries at the same rate in economic terms. If the historical developments in the region are examined closely, it should not be forgotten how unprincipled pragmatism can have slippery ground.

Greece's efforts about trying to establish Anti-TR alliance actually How unhealthy and inorganic in long term, may be the subject of another topic. However, I must say briefly that Greece's inconsistent and irreconcilable attitude is not an pursuit of agreement, but an effort to gather power to impose its own policies. But all these are wasted efforts. Greece' energy, despite all kinds of anti-tr cooperation tries, it lacks the ability to reach the power to remove TR from the Mediterranean.

If I go back to the issue of EEZ signed between Italy and Greece: The agreement made technically contradicts for the the Aegean Grek theses, and this has only occurred because of their own greed, without any interference from TR. It should not be forgotten that there are many states in the region that have not started to speak their last words yet.

Sicily and Sardinia give us huge EEZ, Crete and Cyprus deserve the same.

Only a biased retard does not see this.

The Turkish take over of the Eastern MENA region is an act of war on the Eastern Mediterraneans.

Against Syrians
Against Cypriots
Against Greeks
Against Libyans

And Egypt is taking notice and buying up Italian arms.

These are the same thugs that deny the Armenian Genocide and deny the Atajew burning of Smyrna.

Turks lost the privilege of ruling of minorities LONG AGO.

They don't want to go international courts. They know we are right on this issue. :)

Living on an huge Island such as Crete and Cyprus deserves as much EEZ as mainland.
They also give tiny Meis island which has a 7 km perimeter as much as EEZ as mainland.
