Who do you think is the greatest Indian of Independent India?

I am going to go with Hon. Late President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam...humble background, self-made man

. .
Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman.

Edit:
I found out that C.V. Raman made his most important discovery, the Raman effect, in 1928, before the independence of India.

Therefore I choose:
A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

I also think abdul kalam as he pioneered missile program and space program besides being president.. Then Patel for annexing/persuading states, then nehru for Kashmir then ambedkar for constitution (thogh great but remains of pre-independence acts)

.
Greatest Pakistani: Abdul Sattar Edhi
Greatest Indian: Mother Teresa

All these would be leaders from the Independence era.

Former President Kalam embodies much of what India aspires to be. He rose from a very poor family to become one of India's most loved if not the most loved President. He contributed to India in may ways:
  • As a scientist, he contributed to India's space program.
  • As a scientist, contributed to India's missile program. India's K Series SLBMs are named in his honour (Kalam series). Other than this, no missile is named after a person.
  • As a President, he changed the presidency from being unapproachable to very approachable for the common man
  • As President, he devoted himself to inspiring children. He inspired hundreds of thousands of children to take up science and contribute to country

.
Kalam was a scientist. If we speak hardly his research wasn't ground breaking. But he is a symbol of hardwork and preserverance. More credit goes to Sarabhai for trusting him to the core. That's what leaders are made of.

As for the title, it would be a match between Patel and Ambedkar. Both undertook missions and decisions that would have long positive implications even though there was opposition inside and outside the party.
If not for Gandhi interference, he would have been our first PM of independent India.
Nehru also did good as he kickstarted Indian policy of Panchasheel, non alignment and gave a federal set up strong for its time.
