BYD outed by their rival Great Wall.

SHANGHAI/BEIJING :Great Wall Motor has filed a report with China's regulators against BYD, it said on Thursday, claiming its rival's two top-selling hybrid models did not meet emissions standards and triggering a rare public spat.

BYD rejected the claim, saying its vehicles met China's emission standards and that it reserved the right to take legal action against Great Wall.

The public accusation from Hebei-based Great Wall - China's first listed car maker - has thrown it into an unusual, open fight with BYD, the country's largest and most successful maker of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that has emerged as a rival to Tesla.

Hong Kong-listed shares of Great Wall closed down 7.3 per cent. Hong Kong-listed shares of BYD fell 5.4 per cent.

On its WeChat account, Great Wall Motor said it had submitted documents on April 11 to China's ecology and environment ministry, the industry and information ministry and the top market regulator alleging that BYD failed to meet pollutant emissions standards in two plug-in hybrid models.

The three government agencies did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

"We firmly oppose any kind of unfair competitive behaviour and reserve the right to sue," BYD said in a statement.

Great Wall Motor accused BYD of using non-pressurised fuel tanks in its Qin Plus and Song Plus plug-in hybrids, which let the liquid inside evaporate more rapidly than it would in pressurised tanks.

The Song is BYD's best-selling SUV. The Qin is the company's best-selling sedan.

Great Wall did not provide evidence for its claim and did not explain why any issue had not been detected by regulators before.

Fuel tank pressure is an issue for plug-in hybrids because they are designed to run on electric power alone at times, meaning gasoline remains in the tank longer than it would for a normal internal combustion-engine vehicle.

Pressurised tanks, which are widely used in hybrids and plug-in hybrids, are designed to limit the evaporation of gasoline and meet regulatory standards for the gasoline fumes vehicles emit.

In its statement, BYD said Great Wall's testing was invalid. It said Great Wall appeared to have purchased BYD vehicles and run its own tests without the third-party inspection and based on longer test distances required by China's regulations.

BYD, which is backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, said it welcomed a regulatory review.

"We hope everyone will act in a way that is beneficial to the industry and Chinese brands," BYD said. "The development of the new energy (vehicle) business has not been easy."

BYD has faced scrutiny over fire risks linked to the batteries in its vehicles. Last year, the automaker expanded a recall of another plug-in hybrid model, the Tang DM, after finding a risk water could get inside the battery pack.

Berkshire Hathaway, which has reduced its stake in BYD, remains the company's largest shareholder with just under 10 per cent of its shares listed in Hong Kong.

Testing Agency Responds to Great Wall Motor Report on BYD to Chinese Authorities

Great Wall Motor publicly reported that two BYD models used atmospheric fuel tanks, and that the emissions of evaporative pollutants from the entire vehicle did not meet the standards.

BYD responded that the tested vehicles sent by Great Wall Motor to China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) in Tianjin did not meet the inspection status under the national standard, and its inspection report was considered invalid. Some media called departments of the CATARC for further information.

An employee of the General Management Department said: "This issue will be answered by the group.”

Later, it was learned from the relevant staff of CATARC that the institution is investigating and dealing with the issue.

Great Wall Motor accuses BYD of not using a pressurized fuel tank?

Have you ever thought that even after a competitor uses all the means, they can only find such a small place to blame. This is actually a compliment to the quality of BYD cars.

Is there any car in the world that dares to say it is perfect?

I wonder why Great Wall Motor thinks that it is impossible to reach the pollution standard if the normal temperature fuel tank is used? What is the logic in between?

Because Great Wall Motor uses a supercharged fuel tank, does this mean that other cars must use it?

I look forward to the second review results of the two BYD cars by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Market Supervision Administration. If the review result remains unchanged, BYD shall sue Great Wall Motor for the crime of unfair competition.

Electric Viking is the last legit source. He is another Scotty Kilmer except that he doesn't shake his hands violently.

Other than that the report is fine and to be seen what Happens.

Tesla is experiencing safety issues. BYD has no security issues.

The vehicles within the scope of this recall do not allow the driver to choose the energy regenerative braking strategy; at the same time, the driver may not provide enough reminders when the driver depresses the accelerator pedal deeply for a long time. The superposition of the above factors may increase the probability of mistakenly stepping on the accelerator pedal for a long time, which may increase the risk of collision and pose a safety hazard.

The recall begins on May 29 and will reportedly cover 1,104,622 vehicles. Tesla (TSLA) will be able to use an online software update to fix the acceleration and braking problem. The update will provide drivers with more control over the intensity of the regenerative braking system. The same issue has not been cited by regulators in Europe or the U.S.

In the "made in China" cars not the US ones.

Chinese made Tesla is also sold to North America.

Tesla sells cars at half price in China. This is equivalent to Tesla using your American money to subsidize the Chinese people. You should sue Musk, he is your traitor.

Yeah, the single motor rear-wheel drive version in Canada starting this week.

Tesla to export Model Y from China to Canada for first time in company's history: report

Delivery of a new rear-wheel drive variant of the Model Y will be posted between May and July, according to the production memo reviewed by Reuters. It is expected to be cheaper than its other model and qualify for a government subsidy.

There is currently no rear-wheel drive variant of the Tesla Model Y made in US factories nor sold to the US public. All Tesla Model Y's sold in the US market are premium Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive versions.
