The United Kingdom is to send Typhoon fighter jets and the Royal Navy warship HMS Iron Duke to the Baltics to bolster the region’s security.

The Typhoon jets and the Iron Duke will deploy to the Baltic this month as part of the UK’s commitment to eastern European allies, the ministry of defence said in a statement.

The Typhoons will be based at Ämari air base in Estonia and their crews will operate in a quick reaction alert role, the ministry added.

“British planes protecting Baltic skies alongside our warship patrols and troops exercising, show how serious we are about the security of our eastern European partners,” the UK defence secretary, Michael Fallon, said.

The UK deployed Typhoon aircraft to Lithuania in spring 2014 and to Estonia between May and August 2015. They will operate alongside the Portuguese air force around the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

At sea, HMS Iron Duke is due to return to the Baltic region after participating in the bi-annual, multinational exercise Joint Warrior off the coast of Scotland. The Type 23 frigate is half way through a six-month deployment to northern Europe as part of a multinational NATO task group where she has taken part in exercises and operations. The warship is available to NATO for a range of tasks including diplomatic visits to countries in the region. Britain is also considering sending nuclear submarines in the region if necessary.

Later this year, the Iron Duke is due to operate in the Baltic region with up to four other Royal Navy ships, including HMS Ocean and HMS Pembroke, in the maritime exercise Baltops 16.

Is Iron Duke going to be assigned to a NATO battlegroup? SNMCMG1 is already operating in the Baltic, but is mine countermeasures.

. .
It's Royal air force's turn to guard the airspace of the Baltic states, not too late.

You also have the Frenchies...

The Czech

The Belgians

The Canadians etc.

etc.

huh....what are the Frenches and Italians doing there?? I thought you were best friends with Russians??
nahhhhh......i'm joking as always.:D @Blue Marlin

Well, we have had troops, fighter jets and military equipment in the Baltics for a while now(before almost any European country). Seems we are simply contemplating increasing our commitment judging by Russia's increasing assertiveness in the region. There are talks of even sending in our Nuclear subs depending on the situation.

British deployed and train in the Baltic with their baltics counterparts.
British troops deployed in Baltic states will 'reassure' Nato allies over the threat from Russia, Michael Fallon has said

Plus don't forget that we were one of the first European power to send troops/jets to the Baltic while urging other NATO members to follow suit, due to obvious reasons.:enjoy:

The best way to maintain peace is a robust defence posture and military, any sign of weakness only stokes instability and obviously war.

Well, i dont know about them, but all i know is that NATO is DEFINITELY not quaking in her prince charming shoes.

I dunno I wouldn't trust the French too much; @Vauban here claimed to look out for me and when we ran into hooligans in Napoli he was like 'Armstrong you're on your own....I've got a thing to do' and he went and started flirting with the girls at the nearest bar ! :tsk:

Well my dear chap the last time you helped a friend in the east you ended up in war, today's war will be fought with nuclear weapons, take some of Trumps advice ,leave Nato and the EU as it will only bring you misery and damage British interests.

Don't worry we know how to protect our interests better than anyone. :enjoy:
Nobody is going to war here, each power is merely drawing its red line, that's all. Only a fool will think nuclear powers will go to war with each other. At best Russia can attack small non NATO members like Georgia, Ukraine etc, NATO is NO GO. So sleep calm.

The General may know what they are doing, though some of the British politicians do not seem to have a clue. Lets just say if Putin gobbles up Ukraine then goes onto the Baltics ,how is it in British interests to fight Russia, britain does not need nato and neither do the french, both countries have large nuclear arsenals and eurofighter and rafale in case of french, best to stay out of russia backyard.kudos

There is no such thing as Russia's backyard anymore. They lost that when they took Western charity money in the 90's so that nuclear subs won't rott away in their harbours. As a tv show saying goes...'al magic has its price'

You dont seem to understand much about the geo political realities in our region, neither do you understand our interests. So its better you focus on pakistan, our leaders know our country and interests better than you and even me.

Eastern Europe isn't really seen as a top priority for our armed forces.
France deploys nearly 34.000 soldiers in operations (inside or outside our country) and as prepositioned forces to protect our interests worldwide.

We have other priorities and Russia will not invade anything,so we aren't in a hurry for these Baltic countries.... :mod:
@mike2000 is back In case you ask why those frenchies are nowhere to be seen in E.E. :smokin:

Obviously, france has other interests globally as well, so do we. France does participates with its Rafale in policing baltic states skies against Russian aggression. http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSBREA3N1RE20140424

Even though France doesnt have troops in the country unlike Britain. our level of interest in the region varies just like it does in few other regions around the world. :D
