GUWAHATI: Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said the Centre would invest Rs 20,000 crore to revamp road infrastructure in the northeast.
After a review meeting with the northeastern states here, Gadkari said Assam alone would have road construction projects worth Rs 8,000 crore, while Rs 6,000 crore would be earmarked for Arunachal Pradesh.
Gadkari laid the foundation of National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDC), a company owned by his ministry, which has the mandate to be an instrument of infrastructure development in the northeast and border areas of the country.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi has special focus on the northeast. Improving road infrastructure in the region is our priority. I have discussed the problems in expediting road construction projects with the state governments. Delay in land acquisition and environmental clearance are major hurdles. I have asked the state governments to sort out these issues," said Gadkari.
On allegation of tardy progress of road construction under the Border Roads Organization (BRO) in the northeast, Gadkari said: "About 1,000-km stretch of roads is under the BRO. In areas where the BRO is unable to work, we will entrust some other agency. I have been told that the Imphal-Jiribam highway in Manipur is in very bad shape. So, instead of the BRO, I have asked National Highways Authority of India to prepare a detailed project report."
He said his ministry would soon rope in contractors for carrying out a roadside tree plantation drive across the nation. He informed that nearly five lakh youths would be engaged in the drive as an option for income generation.
