Govt plans to install floating solar panels on dam

They will help reduce evaporation of water, generate clean electricity

The government is working hard on eliminating circular debt in the power production and supply sector as the pace of increase in the debt has gone down to only Rs 10-11 billion a month from the previous Rs39 billion per month, the Power Division minister said.

“By December 2020, the country’s circular debt will drop to zero,” said Omar Ayub Khan

He announced that the government was planning to install floating solar panels on the country’s big water reservoirs and along canals in a bid to generate thousands of megawatts of clean energy.

This is part of the government’s plan to give priority to an increase in the share of renewable energy in the total energy mix.

He revealed that floating solar panels would be installed on Tarbela, Mangla,,GhaziBarotha and Khanpur reservoirs besides canals. “It will not only help to reduce evaporation of water but will also generate electricity,” the minister emphasised.

very good idea .

very good idea .

Not quite, tbh. The construction and maintenance costs to have those panels float on the reservoirs would be quite a bit. Not to forget the potential for water damage to the panels/cells. Seems even more ridiculous when there are much more affordable and sensible options available. A solar power plant in any one of the vast sunlight rich regions of Pakistan would be a much better option (disregarding it being costlier than, say, pretty much any other power generation system). For water retention, Shade balls offer a much more affordable, maintenance friendly and sensible solution.

i think instead of dams they can be used better at sea side as dams have less area

yes you are right , reservoir levels keep changing , it will be difficult .

large tracts of waste lands and deserts can be used for solar water park.

. .
it is a good decision and it can also allow duty free or lessen the duty on imported solar panels also encourage foreign companies to produce solar panels in Pakistan for home use and also they can install solar panels at airport parkings and on street poles too

It’s perfect for water reservoir as it will prevent water evaporation. Japan and China already have these solar farms.
IMHO, building solar farm on sea might not be the best idea due to salt and corrosive by sea water. Many European companies are testing the idea of building solar farms or solar farm Island in the sea. We should work with European or Asian companies to see the project cost and maintenance of these farms.

Are you an engineer or scientist or an adviser in kingdom of Pakpatan?

Do you know breaking /reducing evaporation cycle may have unforeseen environmental effects? wondered what will happen if you block sun light of a still water source?

Best region in Pakistan for solar energy is south Punjab.

Somehow I feel this is not a good idea. Maintenance would be a nightmare.

A giant Tarpaal would be a better option.

The main problem of Pakistan is, although there are number of new projects and ideas, these are implemented too, but after starting it, these projects are not maintained afterwards. They are left as Feral animals. Trillions of rupees wasted like that. Infrastructure, equipment, manpower and what not. The funny part is: even after demise of such projects, these projects remain alive in files, and employees keep drawing their salaries for the rest of their lives.
Depending on dams for electricity is as wasteful as modern industrial complex, as it costs a lot, and a considerable part is wasted in transmission. Better we adopt modern modals.

You hit the nail on the head!!!!.

I think you are right.

Maybe the model of Elon Musk's SolarCity can be adopted or purchased by Pakistani authorities. Home-level electric generation. But @Hamartia Antidote, I wonder if flying birds will get affected by roof-top solar panels.
