The question of whether to sack the Army chief or not is being used to divert the attention of the people from the "real issue of vulnerability of India's security system" and the government should assure the nation on that count, the CPI(M) said today.

"The issue is not about sacking him (Gen V K Singh). It is necessary to ascertain how this communication (his letter to the Prime Minister) got leaked. The leakage itself shows the vulnerability of our security system...It must be settled urgently on the basis of an enquiry and action must follow," senior party leader Sitaram Yechury told reporters.

He was replying to query on whether the CPI(M) supported the demand for Singh's dismissal.

When pressed further, he countered, "Can anyone assure the nation that sacking of the Army chief will improve the situation? That is not the question at all. It is a wrong question. Don't divert from the real issue".

The government should also assure the nation about the doubts raised about the country's defence preparedness. "It should not just be verbal assurance, but action should also be taken if required," Yechury said, adding that it was only the government which knows about the reality.

The letter leak had led to demands by SP, JD(U) and RJD for Gen V K Singh's dismissal, even as the government and the Opposition agreed that the Army chief's concerns should not have come out in the open.

The leak came on top of an acrimony between Gen Singh and the government over his media interview in which he had claimed that he was offered a bribe of Rs 14 crore by a retired Lt Gen for swinging a "sub-standard" defence deal.
